Seconded! AVG is both free and top quality. There's a new version just out. There's a virus scanner and an e-mail scanner. You can schedule the virus scanner to scan your computer when you want. There's an update manager that syncs your local virus database with one on the internet. The application runs smoothly. You never get the feeling that you have a load of bloatware on your computer. The user interface is clean and intuitive. I can't think of a bad word to say about it. I've been using it for over a year now and have never had a single problem.

Haha, i actually installed it last nite, just came home from work there to pick up some cds and my old man deleted it this morning thinking it was some sort of virus.Oh the !ironyyy

See if you can get a torrent of the full version. Has the whole internet security suite vibe going for it. Spam blocker and Firewall, etc. Works really well, and very smoothly. None of your norton's bloat as bladez mentioned.
