Decided yesterday to extend my summer holiday in Crete by a week.
So..I took the overnight ferry and am now in Athens. Sitting outside an anarchist type cafe sipping iced coffee..and the flat I rented for peanuts is a 6th floor penthouse with terrace overlooking the city.
Everyone hates a showoff but I'm busting here.

I had a work video call this afternoon with two people in different parts of Greece and there’s me in rainy Dundalk. Sucks for them as I imagine it’s difficult to work under those conditions (that being sunshine and heat and that).
A cousin of some sort has researched a detailed family history from mid 19th to 20th century.
Extreme poverty was the order of the day. My grandfather was in care and played a blinder to come through it. His father had legal problems after being involved in stealing food to feed his family.
There was some very grim stuff uncovered. Not unexpected.
This is real history not the boring 100th anniversary stuff we have been hearing since 2016.

Found a picture this year online of my great grandfather being evicted from the farm with his family in 1905. Refusal to pay rent, he was land leaguer, had been interred in the 1800's.
Took until the 20's to get it back.
My grandfather, who ended up with the farm, was one of the youngest of 12, many of the more likely older candidates went to the US and Canada because there was no farm when they came of age. I suppose if they had never been evicted it would have been my granddad who emigrated.
My mum is 80 today.
Feel lucky to still have her.

Early morning swim
We meet just before sunrise and get into the water
10 minutes out, 10 minutes back
On the return, we just got the sunrise and it was the most glorious thing - punching it's way through the clouds and I felt this awe-filled communion with nature and the world
It was the kind of thing you'd usually want to grab a camera for, but almost glad there's no photo of it
Powerful memory, tears in the rain

I'm traveling today and bringing a bunch of fancy cheeses with me for a big dinner with old friends
Took down an empty tin from the cupboard to carry cheeses safely and voila
