As Light House Cinema Book Club moves into the second half of 2013, we’re delighted to announce our latest season of books and films from July to November.

We've teamed up with Chapters Bookstore on Parnell St. for a cinema book club. Each month we pick a different book and film adaptation for discussion. Buy the book, read it, then come watch the film and discuss both afterwards in the bar. Both the book and ticket are available at 10% off when you mention the Book Club.

29th July – CRUEL INTENTIONS
Based on the epistolary novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Cruel Intentions transposes the story from French aristocrats in the 1780s to Los Angeles brats in the 1990s - but with enough of a gothic sensibility to do justice to the source material. Richly photographed, star-studded and raunchy, Cruel Intentions is a teen movie with some very adult behaviour – both the book and the film are sure to provide a steamy July even if the weather doesn’t!

26th August – GHOST WORLD
Our first graphic novel! Ghost World by Daniel Clowes follows our hero Enid as she makes the difficult transition between high school and adult life. Thora Birch makes a splendidly colourful Enid and is ably supported by a young Scarlett Johanssen and a loveably morose Steve Buscemi. The blues, satantists, Weird Al and tampons in teacups. What’s not to love?!

30th September – APOCALYPSE NOW
Based on Joseph Conrad’s epic novel Heart of Darkness, Francis Ford Coppola moves the story from the Congo to Vietnam at the height of the Vietnam War. We follow the journey of Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) as he meanders through the horror of war searching for the almost mythical Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando).

28th October - MISERY
As we had so much fun watching and discussing The Shining last year, we decided to keep the Halloween tradition going with another Stephen King adaptation - the harrowing chamber piece Misery. Arguably more thriller than horror, King’s adept hand at psychological terror, coupled with a memorable and Oscar-winning performance from Kathy Bates makes this both a wonderful novel and a classic of modern cinema.

25th November – FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS
Many called Hunter S. Thompson’s account of his drug-fuelled trip to Las Vegas unfilmable. Many balked at the very idea that Terry Gilliam could possibly pull off such an adaptation. But when the insane caper hit cinemas with its madcap visuals and Johnny Depp’s eerily accurate portrayal of Thompson (the two became close friends as a result) it became clear that Gilliam had successfully created a world as vibrant and gonzo as the source material.
