When I was a kid in the 80s everyone said "Charlie" for Charles Haughey and "Garrett" for Garrett Fitzgerald. Dick Spring, being less important, was called by both his names. Pretty sure most people called Bertie Aherne "Bertie" tooI think once you get to a particular level politically people stop using your first name - Adams, Ahern, Haughey etc etc.
