I can see her doing well. She’s incredibly intelligent and a lot of other politicians like her, so she has a slight chance of actually getting shit done. She’ll do a better job than Kelly anyway.

Even Tipp people didn’t like Kelly so I dunno. She is a very city politician so I can see what you mean but seems like there’s more potential with her as leader than anyone else they have at the moment.

tipp people liked kelly enough to elect him to a dail seat three times in a row, to be fair. maybe it was a 'he's a prick, but he's *our* prick' vote.

The also love Michael Lowry there so...

I live very near Bacik and didn't vote for her. I did do a photo op during Repeal though.

Speaking of Tipp.. they defo can't be trusted.

I knew a lad who was in labour for years, and one day ran a poll about socialism for the craic in the internal facebook. Anywhoo he got a load of 'oh that's a bit of extreme' kinda replies from labour members.

He then left them.

*connolly style, not national style.

RE: Alan Kelly and Lowry.

in Tipperary an area of 1,600 square miles, there are only five TDs and like other rural areas people vote for the local person even if they are a bastard.
this problem simply doesn't exist in cities.

the vile Matt McGrath's hinterland is Clonmel which 55 miles by road from Nenagh.
the extreme north of Tipp is closer to Portuma (Galway) or Birr (Offaly) than Nenagh or Roscrea.
actually the far north/NW of the county was moved into Laois/Offaly for the election before last but then went back into county boundaries for 2020.

Lowry (Thurles area), McGrath and Jackie Cahill (faceless FF second term TD from Thurles area in his 60s) are all worse than Kelly (those three pricks are all anti abortion).

the other guy is first timer SF TD Martin Browne from Cashel. when seeking election he listed his occupation as unemployed. Browne has posted conspiracy theories on social media

arguably Kelly (hinterland: Nenagh area and the north of county) is the least bad of the five of them! yes, things are that bad.

Seamus Healy from Clonmel was one of the most left wing rural TDs but lost out to Browne in the only change last time. He had a low profile even in north Tipp and had needed SF transfers to get elected.

I voted for #1 for Healy twice despite the fact he lived over 60 miles from me.

picking a rural TD to lead Labour was obviously a daft idea from an irrelevant party on life support.

finally - blaming people for someone who comes from their area is silly -
Bertie Aherne, Varadkar, the Haugheys, Ray Burke, Liam Lawlor, McDowell, Alan Shatter, Maria Bailey etc.

PS - riath's comment that a lot of people in Tipp don't like Alan Kelly is very true.
he finished 5th in the last two elections and Kelly had difficulty getting votes from left leaning folks even the first time he ran. despite a lack of other options people knew fifteen years ago he wasn't a leftist and would nearly prefer to vote for FG/FF 'cause he was obviously such a fake.

They're essentially a party for aging people in white collar jobs in pre-tech careers that still have a union, and it's a shrinking demo who's interests often don't meet with left wing views.

Someone who's grade 7 in an insurance company or some thing like that might want his rental income from the flat he owns, even though he doesn't mind that his young lad is marrying his boyfriend and he saved a few bob himself in college when "free fees" were introduced by a labour education minister.

is that a reflection of the aging demographic in labour, i wonder? they're probably suffering from a lack of injection of new blood over the last decade and they're all getting old.

Pretty sure it happens in cities too. It's pretty much why FF and FG have been in power since the beginning of the state.
