Kurt Vile on Sunday? (1 Viewer)

I saw it on his myspace but could not find anything else about it. Is it definitely happening? Unlike Foggy not to post something.

'Childish Prodigy' is a peach of a record.

It made my top five of the year list. Fall Demons & Constant Hitmaker are excellent as well. I love that 'dirty guitar' (apologies for my lack of music terminology) sound. Love this guy so much. Foggy Notions is breaking my piggy bank, yo. :(

“Kurt Vile has absorbed a lifetime's worth of FM rock, and the ghosts of Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, and others glimmer under the surface of his woozy, homemade bedroom pop.” – Pitchfork, 7.6

“Vile has no problem bringing any of his talents across – steady-handed, Appalachian-inflected psychfolk reels, doe-eyed wisecracker vocalese…” – Dusted Magazine

“Childish Prodigy feels like some obscure 70s rock LP discovered by chance in a charity shop…” – bbc.co.uk

Kurt Vile is an evocative, textural young singer-songwriter from Philadelphia. His passion for music was encouraged by his father, a bluegrass aficionado who bought him a banjo. Vile eventually advanced from the banjo to other instruments, primarily guitar, and began writing songs that he would record at home. These lo-fi home recordings, often featuring drum machines and other one-man-band, lo-fi adornment, were compiled on a series of CD-Rs that Vile would release in limited editions.

Meanwhile, in addition to his solo work, Vile began collaborating musically with singer/guitarist Adam Granduciel in 2003. Calling themselves War on Drugs, Vile and Granduciel released an eponymous demo EP in 2005. Over time War on Drugs grew to become a full-scale band, and following another self-released EP, Barrel of Batteries (2007), they made their full-length album debut with Wagonwheel Blues (2008) for Secretly Canadian.

Around this same time, Vile made his recording debut as a solo artist with Constant Hitmaker (2008), a full-length release on the label Gulcher. Comprised of home recordings previously released on CD-R, plus new material (most notably the stand-out studio recording "Freeway"), Constant Hitmaker was at first something of a sleeper hit in the indie underground.

While some online publications were quick to champion it as one of the more notable albums of the year, it wasn't until this year, when Constant Hitmaker was reissued by the label Woodsist, and Vile began garnering widespread accolades. In the midst of the acclaim, Vile released the mini-album God Is Saying This to You? on the label Mexican Summer and The Hunchback EP on Richie Records.

This year’s Matador debut, Childish Prodigy is an altogether more serious affair. Opening with the pounding “Hunchback”, it continues through a varied set of tracks ranging from gorgeous little folk pieces (“Overnite Religion”) to all-out jams (“Freak Train”). The record has incredible depth and beauty to it – as well as sound “quality” all over the map, from lo-fi to hi-fi – and unlike so many albums today, rewards repeated listens.

LIE INS
Michael (songs, guitars), Kid Lovebeach (drums, art) and F-Man (producer, 4-track, tape hiss). Lie Ins work schedule: 7.00: Exchange pleasantries, discuss new Karl Blau, set up 4-track and microphones. 7.30: Jam new song. 7.45: Commence recording drums. 8.15: Finish recording drums. 8:20: Lovebeach dispensed to shop to buy chocolate and tea. Michael is not allowed to do this because he just buys "culchie bars" like Star Bars and Wispas. 8:25: Commence recording acoustic guitar. 8:30: Lovebeach returns with rations. Fights ensue over peanut kit kat. 8:45: Second take of acoustic guitar because first one was balls, as a result of fight over chocolate. 9:00: F-Man happy with guitar sounds. Does bounce or some other technical wizardry (it's all very mysterious, secrets of the trade and all that). 9:05: Cigarettes for Lovebeach. Discussions about things like "gated reverb on snares." Anything to avoid the inevitable guitar overdubs. 9:10: Brian Eno's cards whipped out. Advice not taken as there is no cat in the studio, or any strychnine for that matter. 9:11: Commence recording guitar overdub. 9:20: Another bounce. (I guess.) F-man mentions that Paul McCartney always reserved one track for bass. There is no bass in Lie Ins. 9:25: Commence recording vocals. 9:35: Restart vocals, as Michael has been accidentally been singing a Billy Joel song. 9:45: Vocals finished. Slagging. Pack up gear. Eat last bit of chocolate. 10:00: Lock up.
