The lotto is interesting for the age old 'what would you do if won the lotto' examination of aspirations conversation. Was just talking with one of my peers about how entrenched gambling is in general. I worked out a low gain betting system for soccer betting once and won about 6EU but it wasn't worth the work.

gambling is seriously entrenched in this country - its interwoven seamlessly with sporting coverage and consumption of televised sports.

They're back! The €250 a ticket win a house competitions.
It's a shame that the winner could obviously afford to loose €250.

shame or SHAM?

ive been saying this for years, horse racing and greyhound racing would not exist (in this country maybe) if you couldnt bet on it

When banning gambling ads on TV in Australia during sport, they excluded horse racing from the ban because of how interlinked they are.

With the lotto, odds on winning the jackpot is something like 1 in 11 million.
Euro millions is 1 in 140 million.

Australia has a crazy gambling problem, doesn’t it? The pokies are huge... I wasn’t expecting to see casinos in Melbourne.

i meant the one thing O'Leary and McManus both have in common is huge stables of horses entering the same races.
once my friend pointed out both their colours it was obvious that in races here that both parties seem to have multiple horses in nearly every race my pal watched.
sometimes most of the field were horses of those two.
i'm not saying they have any other connection or any joint business interests.

i thought racing was even sillier after realizing this.
but then again my friend doesn't get why cycling teams have a nominated team leader for a race who they back at the expense of his teammates.
sometimes the same thing happened in horse races (pace making by other horses from same stable).

McManus might not be as vile as Denis O'Brien or O'Leary (Magnier is a a shit too) but that's not saying much.
give 500 million away and i'll change my mind.

i take it then that players gambling on their own GAA team is not known to anyone else here ? glad to hear that.

on the contrary, I've been aware of this for years.

I remember one hurling team from Waterford playing in the all-Ireland 7-a-sides one year. Panel of 10 players, they lumped in 1k a head and bet on themselves to win.

Lost in the final.

Pricks.

OK - that would account for the team winning 14,000 i mentioned here on the last page.
gambling has to be viewed as a mental illness.
addiction problems are usually treated by mental heath professionals - inc. gambling.
my GP says that lads on sports teams betting on themselves (usually GAA around here)
is causing huge problems and she has lads coming into her every month that got addicted this way.
talking to someone who was addicted to gambling is very strange - mentions of 'chasing the money' i.e. laying on more bets in the hopes of recovering your losses.
to a non gambler this is beyond foolish but an addict thinks this makes sense...

i suffer from lack of motivation as part of a mental health problems, so i'm as far away from this as you get ; e.g. i can't drive, never go on holiday etc. BUT i've met enough people who squander what little money they have to know they are not in control.

online gambling particularly targets women and by all accounts the amounts of women
involved is surprisingly large.

i fully support making advertising gambling illegal ( or online sites at very least) but (like a tackling lot of big business) there is isn't any will to do this.
