Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (1979) (2 Viewers)

It was a personal article about his own feelings and experiences, I'm sorry but you're just wrong to be pedantic about details in this case.

that sounds alright actually.
the second version of LWTUA is cool - sounds like CHROME or maybe NEU.

one thing i've often thought is worth it's own thread is classic songs being
destroyed by cover versions on just vocals plus piano or acoustic guitar.

e.g. Gary Jules - Mad World or Tori Amos - Smells Like Teen Spirit.

adverts for insurance, mortgages, cars etc (usually aimed at young couples)
are full of these abominations.

anyway i had the misfortune to catch the last 10 seconds of Normal People
the other week and some woman was doing just such a version of LWTUA
on piano - totally yucko.

also while i'm on a roll, it never ceases to amaze me that when arts, culture,
media etc 'creative types' are asked about the music they listen to,
how often they mention the most bland, safe stuff imaginable.

It's all over movies and tv shows too. And I dont watch a whole lot. Horrendous.

I'm generally not a fan of the quiet version of a noisey song,or noisy version of a quiet song ( Dickies doing nights in white satin a clear exception) but that mellow style of cover is the worst.

Its kinda similar but not the same - there was a thing in a local north west paper years ago where they interviewed local boy racers about their cars. modifications, why they like it etc etc, a good concept really - one question was 'whats the longest trip you've taken' - the answer was nearly always 'Derry'.

as my comment on a crap JD cover digressed the thread here's the famous
Steel Harmony JD cover.

must be the 4th odd time this has been posted on Thumped.
one of the best covers i'll ever hear

I liked the Gary Jules version of mad world.
But in general i'm sick of the cutesy cover version trend of the last few years.
Past 20 years at least. They are the worst thing on the planet though, agreed. I still haven't listened to St Vincent album where she did that entire thing to her own album.

Also can we add a venn diagram of

WAIT TILL YOU HEAR (genre A) PLAYED BY THESE (genre B) MUSICIANS.

Which is closely related to this topic very close to my heart.

I blame nouvelle vague. I think they started the ball rolling on this trend. This is from 2004.

Given a similar treatment, too drunk to fuck, teenage kicks, guns of Brixton...

To me they’re a separate but related phenomenon of pastiche cover bands like Senor Coconut and Hayseed Dixie (who are in themselves a substandard Jever Mountain Boys). They’re more interesting to me than the sad, barebones covers that have cropped up over the past decade (or two), or just a straight clone of an original.

jaysis that was a pointless list.

Failures is a cool song - the lads rocking out and Ian shouting away - comes last.
three most famous songs are top three.
nearly all early songs at the bottom and all later songs at top of list.

IMO the songs on Substance that were given away - Komakino, Safety To Where etc
are the weakest songs.

this might be in the things I should have know before now thread, but I just found out that the way they got that weird drum sound was Hannett recorded each drum, on its own track, separately, by itself. Like they only played one drum at a time, that's why it sounds like a sample and there's zero bleed through, because there's nothing else playing, it pretty much is a sample. Then Hannett assembled the whole thing together afterwards. In 1979. Decent.

I knew Hannett fucked around quite a lot, but I didn't realize it was to that extent.
