ATP is thrilled and delighted to have legendary composer John Carpenter performing live for the first time ever at our ATP Iceland festival in Ásbrú, former NATO base in Keflavík, on July 1st-3rd 2016 .
ATP’s Barry Hogan adds, “We are incredibly honoured to present the first ever show by this legendary film-maker and composer. Having had the opportunity to present the maestro Ennio Morricone twice in recent years, it has been a burning ambition of ours to also present John Carpenter, who is both a pioneer and a huge influence on us and so many great musicians and film-makers that we work with. You'd be fucking crazy to miss this.”

John Carpenter has been responsible for much of the horror genre’s most striking soundtrack work in movies he’s both directed and scored, such as Dark Star (1974), Assault on Precinct 13
(1976), Halloween (1978), The Fog (1980), Escape from New York (1981), Christine (1983), Starman (1984), Big Trouble in Little China (1986), Prince of Darkness (1987) and They Live (1988) to name a few.

The themes that drive them can be stripped to a few coldly repeating notes, take on the electrifying thunder of a rock concert, or submerge themselves into exotic, unholy miasmas. It’s work that instantly floods his fans’ musical memory with imagery of a menacing shape stalking a babysitter, a relentless wall of ghost-filled fog, lightning-fisted kung-fu fighters, or a mirror holding the gateway to hell.

Composers before him had used minimalism to create terror, whether it was two piano notes for a killer shark or the stabbing strings of a mother-obsessed psychopath, but it was Halloween’s brilliantly interwoven synth melodies that truly took genre scoring to a new, more sinister level.

In February 2015, John Carpenter released his first solo record of non-soundtrack music, Lost Themes, on Sacred Bones Records, to overwhelming critical success. Recorded with his son Cody Carpenter, and his godson Daniel Davies, The Horror Master proved that not only could he perfectly score his own films — he could also score the movies in your mind. Lost Themes debuted on both the US and UK top 100 charts and garnered extensive and glowing coverage in The Guardian, The New York Times, The Times (UK), Uncut, The Wire, The Los Angeles Times, NPR, Pitchfork, Vanity Fair, Newsweek, Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, Artforum, The Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone and countless other music, horror and lifestyle magazines. Cody and Daniel will be joining Mr. Carpenter for this show in addition to a full live band and spectacular stage production.

About ATP Iceland

“Expectations met, exceeded and transcended, it brings the curtain down on this writer’s festival experience, a like-minded mecca in which spectacular weight and sublime restraint went hand-in-hand.”, The Line of Best Fit, July 2015

"This weekend was without a doubt the best music festival I've ever been to" KEXP, 2014

ATP Iceland will be held at Ásbrú, in Keflavík, Iceland. The site is located only 5 minutes away from Iceland's main international airport, 15 minutes from the famous Blue Lagoon and 30 minutes from Reykjavík. The festival site will host two indoor stages and a cinema showing films picked by ATP and the bands, late-night DJs, as well as usual ATP activities such as The ATP Pop Quiz.

All Tomorrow's Parties has been promoting festivals and concerts throughout the world for almost fourteen years. It was founded in the wake of Belle and Sebastian’s Bowlie Weekender, with Mogwai curating in the unusual setting of Pontins Holiday Camp, Camber Sands, UK. Since then the festival has appeared every year and has expanded across the globe continuing to set itself apart from large scale corporate festivals by staying intimate and fan-focused.

The line-ups are often chosen by significant artists which results in eclectic events that combine performances by legendary and influential acts with appearances by the latest crop of experimental artists from any (and every) musical genre. The festival has become more successful with every passing year, and ATP events have taken place in the UK, USA, Europe and Australia, with past curators including actors Tilda Swinton, Jim Jarmusch, and musicians Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Mike Patton, My Bloody Valentine, Portishead, Sonic Youth, Slint, and Tortoise.

In 2011 ATP launched a new series of curated city-based events called I'll Be Your Mirror, with events so far taking place in Tokyo, London, Asbury Park New Jersey, New York City and Melbourne. ATP has set itself apart from other festivals by embracing seemingly disparate artistic genres, with events featuring art exhibitions, cinema programmes, spoken word performances and stand up comedy. It's been called 'Unforgettable' by Spinand 'the most enjoyable festival experience of our reporter's life' by Pitchfork. It has spawned an acclaimed concert series (Don't Look Back), a record label (ATP Recordings), and the release of a feature length documentary.

Next Halloween, John Carpenter will perform – live and in person – a musical retrospective of his horror soundtrack work, his debut studio album Lost Themes, plus brand new compositions.

Release The Bats will be held first at The Albert Hall in Manchester on Saturday 29th October 2016, and then at London’s The Troxy on Monday 31st October 2016. Both venues will be transformed Halloween style, and attendees are encouraged to dress up for the spooky spectacular.
