Jellyfish - Spilt Milk (1993) (1 Viewer)

you want me to explain why you don't experience the same reaction as me when we're hearing the same pieces of music?

NOIDEA

I dunno. One thing I've found over the years is that it's an album that seems to resonate with a fairly broad range of people whose musical tastes wouldn't normally have much in common. But that doesn't mean it's for everyone - just like all music.

I have no answers.

I have been newly introduced to this album through the Album Club and immediately loved it.

It's a hard one to say why because it does not sound anything like what I usually listen too.

What is wrong with liking something for what it is. There are people who loved the Joanna Newsom album not for me. I don't need to know why they love it.

Different Strokes.

I very much need to know why people love it. Otherwise it's just a really slow version of my Spotify discover playlist. Or Pitchfork top 100 albums.

I like it when people write long posts explaining why they think something is good but there's no actual requirement to do so.

In this particular case I love it for the songs.

There's nothing innovative or original here that requires a back story or explanation. Others have mentioned the outstanding production and playing and arrangements - all of which are noteworthy but not enough to make you truly love a collection of songs - and I'm sorry I don't have a story to tell about my deeply personal relationship with the album, or what it meant to me at a certain time in my life, because neither apply.

It's just an awesome record.

i super don't give a shit about those kind of details

i'm looking for stuff like 'the guitar on this bit' or 'the drum thing there'
or 'this track is all about the blah blah blah'

Yeah, @prefuse 's post on the Aphex Twin album is the best example of this

Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album (1996)

Dunno how to qote from another thread

"This is one of my favorite electronic music albums. Aphex at his apex...almost. I don't like everything he has done. I'm not really a fan of his more techno influenced stuff. I have a problem with that 4 to the floor, dump tis, dump tis, dance, techo, rave shite. He doesn't really do that in fairness. But I just hate that obnoxious crap. And I probably have an out dated negative connotation going way back where I associate rave with low grade, sovereign ring wearing scum. I'll have to work on that. Anyway, for me his golden period is, I care because you do, RDJ, Come to daddy ep & windowlicker. Drukqs was good, but unfocussed & hard going in places. Syro I bought but haven't listened to a whole lot.

The thing I've always loved about his music is that dark, slightly disturbing sense of humour. I can also see how it can really annoy people, but I always find myself laughing listening to Aphex. It's that mischievous sense of fun. What I love about IDM (as they call it) in general is just fucking with sound & rhythm. Making it do things it's not supposed to. Some people do dismiss electronic music saying the machines do it all for them. There is a element of truth in that, but IMHO Richard D James is a genuinely talented guy with a unique & imaginative approach to making music. 20 years old this year, the RDJ album has aged very well.

I love this tune, beautiful strings & scattershot drums. It's a bit of an M.O. for aphex, serene music and abrasive percussion. Pretty good...yeah.

2 -Cornish Acid
Cool, squelchy synth bass, monstrous kick drum, haunting, dystopian notes in the background. Love it.

3 -Peek 824545201
If you play this for regular people the usual response is "WTF is that shite". I think it's great fun.Puts a smile on my face. Almost makes me nostalgic for dial up internet.

4 -Fingerbib
Quick conventional compared to peek. Very Kraftwerk-esque.
Strong classical influence as well.

5 -Carn Marth
Manic toytown rhythms. It's one of my least favourites on the album but great for annoying people. There's a reason why the public never warmed to drill & bass.

6 -To Cure a Weakling Child
A bit freaky this one. I love the R2D2 sounds. 20 years old it still sounds unique.

7 -Goon Gumpas
Wouldn't this be nice on Lyric fm. Very pleasant. Nice pizzicato strings.

8 -Yellow Calx
Glitchy madness. Love this one. Again calm music meets abrasive noise. There's a sound in there that always reminds me of Predator .

9 -Girl/Boy Song
Pure Joy. Strings & violence. One of my favourites. Love the breakdown with the Cello.

10 -Logan Rock Witch
That SOH again. Loads going on. The soundtrack to someone going insane."

There's a nice article here which waxes lyrical about Spilt Milk at the start -
Tom Cox on record hunting

I've just given it a listen today and it's only bloody fantastic so far!! I got a few songs in but fuckin' hell, what a great album so far. Those two opening tracks are worth the price of admission alone. Their Beach Boys/Big Star/Badfinger power-pop mash up sounds great to my jaded ears.
More anon!
