Jaysus cycling! (5 Viewers)

One of these was a family member of mine.

Shit, I'm sorry, man.

I'm also a bit of a cunt. I'll always get on the outside of a left-turning lane, in the middle of the two lanes or in the middle of the road. Motorists don't like it, but that's how it is.
If they're angry, they can see me.

hah, fair point.

I had an incident this morning where I was cycling up the inside lane. Some woman had a rusty old coat hanger where her aerial should have been and it was hanging to the side, about a foot beyond the side of the car. I cycled straight into it. No harm done as it brushed off my arm, but I got a bit of a shock and realised it was low enough to take someones eye out. So I stopped to say it to her, and to warn a couple of lads on bikes behind me. Then I heard some gobshite screaming and roaring out the window of his car. The lights had gone green, yer one was holding up all the traffic, and the lights were going red again. 1-0 to the scutball!!!

Whole heartedly agree here. I've also decided that I work on the road so I own it same as taxi and bus drivers haha, still not a total dick to everyone just when I have to be. Not really surprised by the findings in the report, it all collates with what I see everyday. Hopefully it'll make a difference.

Sorry bout your loss Scutter.

Anyone spot this bike about let me know, was stolen a few days ago.

cheers dude.

sorry to hear about the bike. Will keep my eyes peeled.

Dublin 8 is all I know, it's should stick out quite a bit. Dunno the girl but she was talking to us on the green yesterday asking us to look out for it, I can only imagine teh sentimental value there.

A little help.
Need to prep bike for flight to Barcelona.
Straightening bars I can do but can someone remind me on the pedals.
Is it clockwise turn to remove the right or left?
Last time I took it they didn't make me remove them, but they can be dicks about it.

You guys are all bike geniuses here.

the rule of thumb I follow is, turn the bike upside down. Stand in front of the bike (handlebars end). Turn the pedals towards you to loosen. As one is reverse-threaded, this holds for both pedals.

it's ridiculous
what else is ridiculous is that I know the song used in the video but just can't think of the name.

wait handsome boy moddelling school?

this brings me to something that happened me on sunday. I was going buy a house and a van pulls out not in front of me but just as i was going by the house. I really don't know what he was thinking. he got very close to me. thankfully, he didn't make contact with me.

opinions please... I know my way around a bike and can maintain or change most of the external parts. I have a single speed otp Genesis flyer which does me nicely for most things. However I want to get something with gears for doing longer rides and maybe some light touring. I am looking at old 80s/90s racers for sale but don't really want to pay over the odds.

Basically my question is - is it a really bad idea to try to build a bike myself by buying up a frame, groupset, saddle, bars, stem etc separately, having no real experience of doing it? There are a few workshops where I could borrow tools and a few pointers, and I know that some of that is really specialised stuff. but generally speaking, am I likely to be scraped off the road someday if I try to put the labour in myself?

no, I can't see how that'd happen. The bits needed to keep a bike upright are all fairly straight-forward in terms of how they're put together. Make sure your seatpost/saddle, stem/handlebars and wheels are on right. Make sure your cranks and pedals are on right too if you plan on cycling out of the saddle a lot. Otherwise, whats the worst that can happen other than a long walk home.

Its the other stuff that gets tricky. Putting everything onto a bike should be easy enough. Its getting it working properly that will prove difficult. Indexing gears is a pain in the hole.

Thing is though, bikes are coming so cheap these times that I reckon you'd be hard pushed to source parts more cheaply. Add in the effort required to learn about bike maintenance and actually assemble the thing, then you start wondering if the easy option isn't the better one to take.

In saying that though, put a bike together from scratch and there'll be nothing you won't know about bike maintenance.

thanks, that's good to hear. you're right about the learning curve, that's really what I'm hoping for. I'm thinking that if I can build it up myself it will mean that I can upgrade or swap out parts bit by bit over the years. that's the dream anyway. I know that's also true of something I buy already put together, but I think I'd rather force myself to learn it all.

I think for a road bike you'd be better off buying an already complete one. Unless you get a fantastic deal on a groupset or frame and forks. If you go to chain reaction and search groupsets and then search complete bikes you'll get an idea on the kinda price cut you'll get by buying a complete bike.

If you were building a fixie or single speed then building from scratch is much more affordable but you're not so yeah my advice would be to look at complete bikes especially ones that need a few bits replaced or worked on as that you can save money and learn loads in the process.
