I'm flying into Tokyo on December 27th and leaving on the 8th. Any suggestions for what to do? Particularly for New Years.

They don't do much Christmassing over there. New Year's is the biggie, so it's a good time to go. Find a local shinto shrine with stuff on. There'll be loads of people queueing, boozing, stalls and stuff. You can queue up and light a piece of rope from a sacred fire to make your first rice of the year. Or you can just hang about, then go get drunk and do karaoke, which is what we did. Then there's stuff on in the Buddhist temples on new year's day. More queueing, stalls with mochi rice balls and corn on the cob dipped in brown stuff. And more boozing.
