Mute did a pressing of this in the UK.
this was posted in January 2006, so it must have been one of the first things I discovered on you tube.

Dusseldorf band who normally had heavy WIRE influences but weren't beyond having a ska song and this CHIC/disco meets punk tune which later (1982) became a hit (# 22) in West Germany after it released as a single against the band's wishes.

DAF - Der Raeuber und der Prinz (1981)

High quality production by pops big hitters. You can see Trevor Horn on bass here.

To me their problem was their sheer "uncoolness". Everyone fancied Thereza Bazaar but David Van Dey is and was an awful prick

it's fucking AMAZING. David Van Dey is something else

I am extremely sorry for posting the same thing THREE times.
basically i am using a dodgy old computer and when you try to perform an action
on it sometimes it doesn't go through for about 30 seconds.
so I didn't know any of the posts I made had gone through.

actually I went off earlier to find another German song not knowing the first two
posts had actually gone through. not able to find the song I then came back later
thinking I hadn't posted anything and posted my masterpiece again !

Not at all, it's 100% @pete's fault

1979 so doesn't count in this thread, but until a bout an hour ago I did not realise that this was pre-80s shiny pop Dollar

"My one regret in life is that I missed Dollar's performance in the Officer's Mess on the Falklands."

He's only a minor player in them but you can already see him fancying himself as being the real star. Insufferable

I remember this! Also brings to mind that terrible Irish pop group "6" that did a woeful cover of it, compete with inept rap breakdown

Just talking with someone about Dollar. I think we all agree that Dollar would have been way more successful if it wasn't for that colossal prick David Van Dey. If I was Thereza Bazar I would hate him.

best performance I've ever seen on the show.

the other German song I was looking for earlier was done seemingly by a hack producer in the wake of DAF's success in Germany. it ended up much weirder than DAF - it was sung in death metal style vocals (in 1982/83 !) by a guy who looked like Darth Vader in the video !
the tune was covered by a few metal bands inc. one those early Nuclear Blast bands maybe PUNGENT STENCH or DISHARMONIC ORCHESTRA ??!!
but for life of me I couldn't remember the name of it.

finally I found the Neue Deutsche Welle / EBM song with the Darth Vader video and death metal vox !

this got to #11 in the German charts on reissue in 1983.

a total 'WTF was that' tune. I first heard this only last year.
to my ears it sounds like a metal song from a much later era played Electro Body Music / DAF style.
but amazingly this was really recorded in 1982.
actually it's a guitar synthesizer... and now I think of it, this also sounds like a lot of much more recent German music.
anyway it was tormenting since this afternoon that I couldn't recall the name.
