It's the Friday 80s Pop song thread (3 Viewers)

So whats the deal, were the Blow Monkeys just never taken seriously at the time? They're not a band who come up much in serious The Quietus-like writing about 80s pop, why are they largely forgotten but crap like Wet Wet Wet are still remembered? This song is forever popping into my head

They were huge briefly, no? I was under the impression that Dr Robert was a mega star

I'm sure they were, just they appear largely forgotten if you weren't there at the time, streaming numbers are pretty poor compared to other bands at the time, although better than, say, Toyah.

I'm genuinely curious about these things, how some bands stay in the public imagination, or if not that then at least in critics' imaginations so they're always getting rediscovered by music geeks, and others who are just as good end up little more than a footnote.

I was shocked a few years ago when some friends in their 30s had no idea who Toyah was. And they were goths and punks..like, how could they not know? She has since reentered the public imagination.

This is very sappy....but I really like melody.

the bridge at 02:48 is a bit naff. In the scheme of things.

Vixen - Edge of a broken heart.
My fav, Jan Kuehnemund aka the hot guitarist with the stripey hair passed away in 2013.

I haven't heard that since 1988. Wow. And it will be 1988 again before I play it again

On a hot summer's afternoon, there is only one girl band from the 80s that matters

never heard of ORAL before but apparently Gary Bushell was behind this and unfortunately they weren't a real band:( disappointing.

Blow Monkeys discography on wiki - only two top 20 hits in UK
lots of minor hits, radio airplay and press coverage as I remember but it didn't translate into record sales.

Toyah was on an indie label wasn't she? (Safari) I'll have a guess she wasn't internationally that popular.
I first heard of her in the 90's but it was years before I heard any music by her and it was all unfamilar

EDIT: there used to be a KLYMAXX copyist from Minneapolis - I think his name was Rogers?
