Anyone tried it? Is it any use? Any recommendations for someone to go to? I have a really bizarre phobia that is likely to affect my quality of life in the next few months and I want it Gone. Catwoman? Anyone else?

i've been studying hypnosis - alongside NLP - for quite some time now, and have been practicing it on both myself and others with a great deal of success. while i dont know of any therapists in particular, it is extremely effective in many cases of quickly overcoming anxieties and phobias.

Went to the alpha clinic in goatstown to try give up smoking. He seemed really nice, but then he was using his soothing hypno-voice on me. As to whether it works or not it really depends on the person; how much you can relax your mind and let the hypno gent/gentesse do their thing. Didn't work for me in the end. My mind was

TOO BLACK, TOO STRONG.

NB The hypnotherapy mostly seemed to involve being hooked up to something that was like a cross between a Voight-Kampff machine and an electric chair.

that wouldn't be a recommendation for someone specialising in anxiety, so?

you should read Derren Browns Book - Tricks of the Mind.

He basically says that noone has entirely established what hypnotherapy is or how it works. He has his own ideas. It seems to work on people who are open to suggestion and want to by hypnotised. Maybe if you read how he does it, it would ruin the process for you. so maybe don't read the book.

derren brown makes extensive use of NLP in his mind tricks. here is a good example, NLP manipulation used on simon pegg (spaced / shawn of the dead):

the bandler / grinder school of hypnosis is concerned primarilly with HOW and WHAT things work, and not - as in the case with so much psychotherapy - in the WHY.
of course, it is not going to work on everyone, and there are an awful lot of ignorant charletans passing themselves off as "therapists". however, its not as if the professional psychiatric world is staffed entirely by sainty genuises who always know exactly what they are talking about, and at the very least there isn't the swift perscription of mind-numbing drugs (which is a whole other world of things that dont work for everyone) involved.

I filmed a hypnotist in Clontarf who was helping a couple to give up smoking. He dealt with phobias too.

i can't see that being for me somehow.

apparently hypnosis only works if you want it to work. which i do. so i am optimistic. brian conniffe is going to have a go on me first and then i might try a professional.

Does it work for motivation? Like getting people to stop posting on thumped and managing to do all the things they keep putting off doing in their everday lives? :) :) :) :) :)

I've always been interested by hypnotherapy but abit intimidated and hesitatant also as you are so under the control of a stranger. Theres a lot of trust involved

IOt does indeed work. Helped me get thru's some major shit a couple of years back. I'm like a completely different person now, which is great 'cos I was a bit hard to live with. Most of my mates have commented on the difference. "If they could see you now..." etc.

I'd go with Brian and the NLP thing. Thats' the chappie that worked for me. Had a pretty decent therapist who was as keen on the idea as me. My work "Employee Asistance Officer" put me in touch with him, even though he worked in a different Department.

Can't encourage this enough. Just try it. It won't hurt.

i think of NLP of basically being the same in intention and nature as "magick" (crowley's definition of magick as being "the science and art of creating change in accordance with ones true will"). of course there is going to be a small number of people who will want to use the tools to control and manipulate people in a selfish and negative way, but the fact is that these are pathetic and insecure people, who - at the end of the day - will have to face the ugliness of their true nature. it will always be far more interesting and rewarding as a method to help and empower people. criticising it is like criticising electricity: you can use it to power a home and read at night, or to electrocute someone. as with all of these things, the people who use it negatively are totally inadequate and generally failures in all aspects of their lives.

I got it done around September...

It was meant to help try me relax to prevent me from getting so angry, upset and annoyed when some one said something I didnt like..

hahahah anyone think it worked?

This gob shite of a woman made me a tape which I havent listened to because Ive no use for the shit she was saying on it. Ive told my mother that I listen to it... but i dont. Hippy shit.

electicity is definitely creepy

is there any way of becoming interesting enough to have the weird phobias/anger issues/insomnia/etc. that people from thumped suffer from? I'm so freakin' dull
