Just wondering, what the general spend is. The pressure to go beyond your means can be very bad. For instance, I am rather stupidly going to a wedding in San Fran at the end of January. This will cause me to miss valuable work income for the month of January (the leanest month) as well as cost me in terms of a wedding present, flights, and accomodation (though cheap), not to mention socialising meanwhile I will receive my last paycheck between today and February 1st at midnight tomorrow and am going to pay my rent for december and january straight out of that...hmmmm, what a mess, though to get back on topic.

I still predict I will spend at least 700 euro on socialising, travel and gifts between now and New Year's Eve. Any advice on how to cut back on that without looking like a scrooge???

I smell a serious answer coming....

no,

I don't...that was just someone nearby answering a thread on "reverse polarity titanium pre-amp cables modulated for the analogue LFO pedal circuit bent on a rare early 80's Roland 808 once owned by David Byrne's half cousin who holidayed in west Donegal bet you never knew that of course you wouldn't you Dave Fanning Cunt" or some such...

Im not boozing this year so that will cut down loads on what im spending.

Last year I spent about €1000 over christmas i think. Splashed out big time on eveyone's presents and drank lots and lots.

It will be a much cheaper year this year.

Restrict the number of drinks you consume and don't get into rounds. Have maybe 2 or 3 drinks on a night out and drink water in between.

Leave your bank and credit cards at home and only carry enough cash for the couple of drinks, entrance charge and taxi or whatever.

I'm pretty certain I will end up spending a lot more than I can afford to.

I have budgeted an amount which I believe to be fair for holiday spending over and above normal spending, divided into 8 parts over 4 weeks. This expenditure has been included in my budget plans since their inception last January.
Any difference between actual and budgeted expenditure is redistributed over the remaining period of the 4 weeks, allowing for flexibility of expenditure.
My spending is currently 10% under original estimates with regard to holiday spending. However, I am 20% over budget for the last 11 months, caused mainly by excessive nicotine intake. Notwithstanding excessive purchasing of pints, I hope to recoup some of this deficit through xmas money in the immediate term, though obviously a cessation of nicotine intake is necessary for sustained cash flow health.

SRSLY

My total amount is slightly lower than yours. I’m going to Italy in January. I’ve budgeted for it, and it’s cool. So I think you should budget ahead by about 6 months and base your finances on that 6 months, not on what happens between now and january.

Also:
Drink at home.
Set an upper limit to spend on xmas presents for individuals. If your present for someone is above a certain amount (lets say €50), then just give that person €50
Easiest option: Don’t go to the wedding.

Well it's my birthday on Sunday, so might get drinks bought for me that night anyways! Yeah rounds are a nightmare at christmas. You go for a Guinness for yourself and get asked to get another 6 tia maria/jack daniels/vodka blue wkd specials..and are left weeping when you get well less than 20 euros change from a crisp 50!

Switch to Beamish. Cheapier and tastier.

The worst is people who have vodka or whatever on someone else's round and buy a guinness for themselves on their round...

Why are you paying December and January's rent together?

If anything you should pay your rent late. Look at your bills and see which ones you can lean on to sustain your cash flow, like:
ESB: They won't cut you off if you don't pay them straight away. They don't charge interest, leave that bill for a while.
Credit Card bill: It will give you up to a month or something before it starts charging interest, so leave that until you can afford to pay it, that's what it's for like (But DO NOT leave it so long that you are charged interest).

Of course, this sort of shit is very tricky, so be careful.
