Two girls at a middle school in central Florida were waiting in a bathroom, planning to overpower 15 smaller students, kill them with knives and drink their blood, authorities said Wednesday.

The Bartow Middle School students were arrested Tuesday and charged with conspiracy to commit murder, possession of a weapon on school property, carrying a concealed weapon, and disruption of a school function, Bartow Police Chief Joe Hall said during a news conference.
According to officials, the 11- and 12-year-old girls said they were Satan worshipers and were going to drink the blood of the students they killed, and possibly eat their flesh. The girls also planned to kill themselves, they said.

I seem to remember reading about a case like this before. One of the perpetrators was an easily-led agreeable type, who's now out of jail, and the other couldn't really distinguish between the fantasies in her head and real life (and is still in jail)

Brazil is so fucked.

The 20% Casey voters show it could absolutely happen here though. I see lads on twitter moaning about the socialist elites running Ireland and they genuinely seem to think this is the case.

The comments on a journal/broadsheet piece last week about the new 90 day limits on Airbnb rentals included many people giving out about how FG were communists

I'd happily swap guardian and journal opinion pieces for an actual socialist economic plan implemented in Ireland.

I have a theory forming in my head about virtue frameworks and status games that get played inside a culture. Seems to me that a virtue framework is one of the main ways we compete for status - we (nearly) all want to be "good", and we gain standing by being seen to be good. Worked that way during Catholicism's reign here, works that way in the punk scene, works that way in the wiki movement. Does anyone know if there's an existing body of thought on this stuff?

The complete works of philosophy and anthropology?

I dunno, what you're saying reminds me of Sarah Thornton's Club Cultures, if a little indirectly. I think a lot of it can be mapped onto current online political thought.

The amount of energy required to “mine” one dollar’s worth of bitcoin is more than twice that required to mine the same value of copper, gold or platinum, according to a new paper, suggesting that the virtual work that underpins bitcoin, ethereum and similar projects is more similar to real mining than anyone intended.
One dollar’s worth of bitcoin takes about 17 megajoules of energy to mine, according to researchers from the Oak Ridge Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio, compared with four, five and seven megajoules for copper, gold and platinum.

Energy cost of 'mining' bitcoin more than twice that of copper or gold

Was chatting with my acupuncture person yesterday and her concept of a future horror is people having fitness trackers linked to health insurance, like getting refused treatment because you had a pint or didn't jog etc. That would dovetail wonderfully with having an inescapable profile embedded in your hands and read by every China data fountain coming off eBay for the iot.

That already exists in the US.

not so much the pint bit though.
