Grindhouse Dublin is a new cult enthusiasts’ monthly movie club, hosted by and for film-lovers of all genres. The season launches at Light House Cinema on Friday, June 28th, with the aim of capturing the fun and spirit of Cinema Houses on 42nd Street New York between the 1960's and late 1980's. Serving up a selection of classic or rarely screened films, the inaugural season kicks off with a screening of John Carpenter’s Escape From New York, starring Kurt Russell in his most iconic role, Snake Plissken, which hasn’t had a theatrical screening in Ireland for close to 30 years.
Grindhouse Dublin will take place exclusively at Light House Cinema, Smithfield. Films will start at 10:30pm with chats and specially designed drinks available at the bar from 9pm.
Naomi Butler, who heads up the new cult film club, said: “This is a great chance for people to see films that may never have been released in Ireland or have not been seen for many years.”
Charlene Lydon, Programmer at Light House Cinema said: “We’re delighted to partner with Grindhouse Dublin on a season which we know will get Dubliners excited. These films are classic of their genre, and the Grindhouse Dublin season provides cult film fans with a rare opportunity to catch these gems”.
The original Grindhouse cinemas not only provided thrill-seekers with gritty exploitation features but were also arenas for independent film-makers & newcomers, allowing them to show off their work and, in some cases, start film trends. Keeping true to this ideal, Grindhouse Dublin hopes to help create a new generation of Grindhouse film-makers by showcasing their shorts before the start of the main feature.
Ads and trailers from the year each film was released will screen before the main feature, bringing audiences back in time to experience these cult films as they were meant to be seen: late, loud and on the big screen. The season will also see premieres of short films from around the world along with a few other surprises.
Escape from New York. June 28th from 9pm at Light House Cinema, Smithfield.
