egg_, egg_
he's got one leg
so he doesn't dance
but he likes romance
and he wets his pants
when he tries to prance

egg_, egg_
went down to Killybeg(s)
he likes to think he's better
than a 3-year old bed wetter
he wishes he was fatter,
but it really doesn't matter

egg_, egg_

ok that's about it (bows to rapturous applause, exits stage left)

"White Collar Boy" by Belle and Sebastian

You're a white collar boy and you gave into the law
Give in to the pressure the cops gonna getcha
You were a thieving dog at work until they caught your little paw
Your wage won't stretch, to picking up checks
A custodial sentence you narrowly avoided
Community service you had to go along with
You're banging the rocks at the old city docks
Poor boy poor boy poor boy poor boy

You were chained to a girl that would kill you with a look
It's a nice way to die she's so easy on the eye
She said let's get away, but you played it by the book
You're a warden's pet, she's a screaming suffragette
'We ain't in prison, we'll just finish up and go home'
She said, 'Not for me, I've got plans for later on'
So she belted the sarge and she jumped on a barge
You fell, you fell you fell you fell

White collar, got dirt in your pants
You got egg in your hair
You got spit in your chin
White collar, scared to be bored
Blue Collar, she's opening doors
White collar boy, on the run from the law

She said 'You ain't ugly, you can kiss me if you like'
Go ahead and kiss her, you don't know what you're missing
You said 'Baby, you're special,
But there's something not quite right.'
She's a Venus in flares and you wanna split hairs!
'I am innocent, you are a rocket.
Things were ok till you took out the copper'
Leave me alone, and get used to the chains
You're a pain, a pain, a pain, a pain

White collar, got dirt in your pants
You got egg in your hair
You got spit in your chin
White collar, scared to be bored
Blue Collar, she's opening doors
White collar boy, on the run from the law

Cactus by the pixies

Sitting here wishing on a cement floor
Just wishing that I had just something you wore

I put it on when I grow lonely
Will you take off your dress and send it to me?

I miss your kissin' and I miss your head
And a letter in your writing doesn't mean you're not dead
Run outside in the desert heat
Make your dress all wet and send it to me

I miss your soup and I miss your bread
And a letter in your writing doesn't mean you're not dead
So spill your breakfast and drip your wine
Just wear that dress when you dine

P I X I E S

Sitting here wishing on a cement floor
Just wishing that I had just something you wore

Bloody your hands on a cactus tree
Wipe it on your dress and send it to me

Sitting here wishing on a cement floor
Just wishing that I had just something you wore

This Must Be The Place - Talking Heads

Home is where i want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb - born with a weak heart
(so i) guess i must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It's ok i know nothing's wrong . . nothing

Hi yo i got plenty of time
Hi yo you got light in your eyes
And you're standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
Never for money
Always for love
Cover up + say goodnight . . . say goodnight

Home - is where i want to be
But i guess i'm already there
I come home - -she lifted up her wings
Guess that this must be the place
I can't tell one from another
Did i find you, or you find me?
There was a time before we were born
If someone asks, this where i'll be . . . where i'll be

Hi yo we drift in and out
Hi yo sing into my mouth
Out of all tose kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I'm just an animal looking for a home
Share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
Love me till i'm dead
Eyes that light up, eyes look through you
Cover up the blank spots
Hit me on the head ah ooh

It's over - Roy Orbison

Your baby doesn't love you any more
Golden days before they end
Whisper secrets to the wind
Your baby won't be near you any more

Tender nights before they fly
Send falling stars that seem to cry
Your baby doesn't want you any more
It's over

It breaks your heart in two, To know she's been untrue
But oh what will you do? When she says to you
There's someone new We're through We're through
It's over It's over It's over

All the rainbows in the sky
Start to weep, then say goodbye
You won't be seeing rainbows any more
Setting suns before they fall, Echo to you that's all that's all
But you'll see lonely sunsets after all

It's over It's over It's over It's over

I keep reading the singing the first verse of Me & Bobby McGee

How he pairs Busted flat with Baton Rouge
Feelin’ nearly faded as my jeans
– is just a great line

Busted flat in Baton Rouge, headin' for the trains
Feelin' nearly faded as my jeans
Bobby thumbed a diesel down just before it rained

Took us all the way to New Orleans

All of it really though.
Pairing up harpoon with blowin’ and the red and blue for him and Bobby

I took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana
And was blowin' sad while Bobby sang the blues
With them windshield wipers slappin' time and
Bobby clappin' hands we finally sang up every song
That driver knew

Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose
And nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free
Feelin' good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues
And buddy, that was good enough for me

Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee.

Then the hard alliteration of coalmines, Kentucky, and California to the soft sibilance of sun, shared, secrets, soul – she freed him from the darkness, raised him up from the coalmines to the sun and she softened life from hard Cs to round Ss
Like how she kept him from the cold,

From the coalmines of Kentucky to the California sun
Bobby shared the secrets of my soul
Standin' right beside me through everythin' I done
And every night she kept me from the cold

Then somewhere near Salinas, Lord, I let her slip away
She was lookin' for the home I hope she'll find
Well I'd trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday

Holdin' Bobby's body close to mine

“Well I'd trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday”
is as evocative a line as you’ll get.
But especially as he’s pairing it with the chorus idea of free costing nothing, and the cost of nothing being free.
He’d give everything he has to have nothing.

Kristofferson was trying to recreate the feeling from the end of La Strada, where Anthony Quinn is tormented on the beach and desperate, longing for the woman he abandoned (she who played the trombone when they travelled).
He really nails it.
It's a heartbreaker.
He's as good as Dylan here.

Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose
And nothin' left was all she left to me
Feelin' good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues
And buddy, that was good enough for me

Good enough for me and Bobby McGee

Someone I love, loves this song and they sent me the first verse apropos of nothing – but you know when you’ve heard something a hundred times but never really listened?
I finally listened to it.

Sorry to be a bore.
It’s a rainy Tuesday and there is nothing to do til 5pm
And the Genius entry for this great song kinda sucks.

I'd love if the album club was more like this post. Actually looking at what makes a song work. I bore the shit out my kids blathering on about shit like this... "see the way the emphasis in the lines in the second half of the verse changes" (this is about Hip Hop Hooray FWIW)

Even though i'm at it 25 years I still think it is largely modern witchcraft and trying to take them apart to find out how they work is like taking a surfboard apart to see how the sea works.
I do subscribe to the David Byrne side of things in terms of immersing yourself in it though.

Years ago when a friend was telling me how great The Fall were he mentioned the lyric from Hip Priest;"...my last clean dirty shirt out of the wardrobe ".

I was really impressed until I realised it was swiped from Kristoferson's Sunday Morning Coming Down; "Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes. And found my cleanest dirty shirt. "(another song worthy of @7 - No tomorrow 's analysis)

For me it's a little more like when you love something, you just like to marvel at the detail of it and the love and genius the artist poured into it

What does Byrne do?
