Okay, so I've gone gluten free. Oddly enough, I think it may be the root cause of many things so I thought I'd give the gluten free diet a test. So far, so good. In just a few weeks I've seen a huge difference in the way I feel. I've bought a few cook books and am trying to get my head around the whole intolerance thing. Wheat and/or gluten seems to be in nearly everything! I've pretty much just been eatting at Cornacopia everyday because I'm lazy.

At any rate, these are things I've come across in the last week:

Craft Bakery in upper Rathmines does Gluten Free Wednesdays.
Credo Pizzeria (off Camden St.) does Gluten Free pizzas.
Salamanca & Gotham Cafe list GF items on their menus.

If anyone has recipes they've tried that are easy/tasty for one or two servings, please post them. Or any other helpful tidbits.

Jesus, this just sounds difficult.

what can you eat?

Hence why I need tips! The improvement already is prompting me to get tested with a GP to be sure and possibly seeing a nutritionist to come up with something (for someone as lazy as myself) to follow. I'll be drinking ciders with you now. Bulmers and Kopperberg = gluten free.

Rekorderlig ok? It's the best. Kopperberg just leads to sugar headaches

Update:

I went to that pizza place after work to test it out. Apparently they aren't doing gluten free yet, maybe by next week though. Those dudes are super excited by pizza. They have a separate little kitchen just for the gluten free doughs. The Italian chef was talking to me about the dough and the owner behind the counter asked me more questions about my diet and health than my GP. Very strange and slightly awkward conversation, he even recommended a doctor. That said, he took my details and told me I could be a tester when they are ready to go. Free pizza for me, huzzah! Now I'm just sitting here eating pistachio nuts at a loss of what to have for dinner.

Hi Jill, there is a small Irish company called Delicious-the Gluten Free Bakery. I think they are one of the only artisan bakeries in Ireland, specialising in gluten free cakes and breads. The website is pretty nice - lists their products/ recipes etc.

http://www.delicious.ie/

Also, Blazing Salads, on the street behind the Georges Street arcade, do a range of gluten free products.

Hope this is of help:

Hell pizzeria does gluten-free bases; Cafe Fresh in Powerscourt has gluten-free food, as does Blazing Salads; Mao's and Monty's of Kathmandu have separate gluten-free menus, you just have to ask.

If you get the blood test for coeliac, you should make sure you are eating gluten beforehand. Because if you're off gluten, and it turns out you are a coeliac, your body (the villi etc) will start healing itself and it could lead to a false negative during a blood test.

www.glutenfreegirl.com is a great gluten-free blog, she has links to other gluten-free blogs.
If you're not coeliac, you could be gluten-intolerant, or wheat intolerant too - personally I think even if the blood test doesn't indicate coeliac, if you feel better gluten-free (you could always test other grains to see if they suit, eg spelt might be ok as it's low in gluten, if you're not coeliac but gluten-sensitive) so just go with what you feel is best :)

a friend of mine says that M&S have just launched a gluten free range so you don't have to spend ages walking around different aisles checking ingredients.

I'm curious about this - in what way do you feel better? I went on a gluten/dairy free diet for a while a few years ago and i remember that i felt great, but not how, if that makes any sense. Lately feeling very stodgy, and often feeling sick after dinner for some reason.

Less headaches, no stomach aches or discomfort (pretty much 24/7), no need for tablets like rennie (which I ate like candy), less dizziness, I can actually sleep now and I generally just have more energy. Oddly, I thought all of the above were side effects from a medication I have to take. Turns out, cutting out gluten = little to no "side effects" so I'm thinking it's just an intolerance. It like wearing a pair of shoes that are a bit too small for years. It's annoying but you get use to it and learn how to make it hurt less. Then someone gives you a pair that actually fit and you can't believe the difference in the short amount of time. After years of being in and out of hospitals, I'm actually rather annoyed that no one has ever suggested it to me before. So far it's been a pain in the ass but when it comes down to it, knowing how certain foods will make me feel now, it's easy to pass over them. I just need to figure out what I can eat that doesn't take too much effort.

In case you're interested, Dove's Farm gluten-free flour is great for baking, you use it like normal flour, just with a little extra liquid.

RSJ - I used to get that sick feeling anytime I had dairy in my food so I had to knock it on the head big time. I did then get it occasionally but once I went veggie it stopped, but I really only ate chicken so I'm not sure if it was that or not! I dunno if that's of any help :p

Here is a recipe for a really nice flour, gluten and sugar free cake.

1/2 cup butter at room temperature

1/2 cup cream cheese
1 cup Zylitol (sugar would probably work too)
5 large eggs, at room temperature
2 cups ground almonds
1/2 cup ground flaxseed
1 teaspoon baking powder
3 tablespoons cocoa powder (or you could use vanilla or other flavouring)

Cream butter, cream cheese and zylitol together, mixing well. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each.

In a separate bowl, mix all the dry ingredients. Add egg/butter mixture to flour a little at a time while beating.

Pour into greased 9"-10" Springform tin, (or 9" round cake tin) and bake at 180 degrees for about 50 minutes.

It's a big favourite at our place.

The Millstone restaurant also do gluten free pizza (and mark the ceoliac friendly food on the menu), and if you're going out for a meal menupages can be useful for getting a list of places that are ceoliac friendly.

Kelkin Gluten Free Chocolate Flavoured Teacakes taste like death by Wagon Wheel

Okay, this is officially starting to blow. Hard like.
I WANT a sandwich on thick cut bread. Or toast. Or garlic bread. Or pasta. Gah!
I'm very grumpy today. I blame it on cravings.

You said it's an intolerance right? So surely you could have a bit without dying, Shirley? Or would that just put you on the long road to oblivion?

Have you gone shopping for any gluten-free alternatives? Some gluten free bread is disgusting, I found some ciabattas that were really nice recently.
There are loads of pasta alternatives.

Yeah, I have and they're pretty rank. The rice based 'pasta' is better than the corn but not by much. The bread I've found thus far is only okay and has to be toasted not to taste like cardboard. Fresh bakery breads seem to fall apart and taste too sweet for savoury sandwiches. Where did you find these ciabattas? I bought a bunch of different flours and am going to try to make some flat breads. It's next on my list of things to do.
