Gigs starting back up (1 Viewer)

I've not really watched any of these filmed gigs. For me music is all tied up with being in a place, around other people.
Well indeed, but the filmed gigs were actually an ok substitute I thought. The Nick Cave one was great, some of those Fatboy Slim rave-y things were fun too. I reckon having a bunch of people around to your house to watch a filmed gig (if you had decent sound and a big enough screen) could be lots of fun

Just packing my gear for rehearsals for a theatre show in the Fringe, starting next week in The Beckett. We had a chunk of rehearsals during the summer, Covid test every day, very strict distancing, masks all the time except for the last run of it. It didn't blunt the brilliance of being able to be in a room playing music. I had one (1) gig over the Dark Ages, a streamed yoke with no audience, musicians in opposite corners of a well ventilated room. The Covid restrictions were just one more variable in the stack of reasons to be nervous about a gig. I honestly can't remember what the last gig I was at is. Probably well before the lurgy though. I miss the sociables, to be honest, but the evaporating money, 1-pint-too-many shite talking, hangover, disappointment at a mediocre gig, organising time off etc etc...that stuff I do not miss.

Actually, not living in Dublin or any city, not being able to go out, no gigs, etc, has been brilliant for my own practice here. I really needed to be playing, so I did, just on my own. It's a new thing, I much prefer collaborating, but this is great too

I saw a few theatre and dance shows, all great. Sometimes the restriction of no audience and all that has made people very creative and resourceful

Went to my first gig in ages. Fella called Jack White
Took a couple of clips. Id add youtube links but you can watch em both on rolling stone site instead, they prob need the cash.

The last gig I went to was....deerhunter in Whelan's, November 2019. The afternoon show.
I want everything to go back to normal, of course, but to be honest, I've been a bit underwhelmed by gigs for the last few years. Not really that excited to see any particular band at the moment.
But am hoping things get back to how they were asap.

Ps. I'm not a miserable bastard.

Going to gigs was very much my thing before Covid, though I had reached the point that I was a little worn out by them. Basically all my socialising was going to a gig and talking to the people I knew that were at it. I'd felt that I was only going to them because that was what I did.

I do have tickets for some things next year already (Low, Pavement, St Vincent) and I'm a big fan of all three so hopefully that'll rekindle the flame somewhat.

I did see a woman in Cobh playing a loop station set in a bandstand a few weeks ago, she wasn't great but it was live music so I stood and watched for a couple of songs.

I too have also not bothered with any live streamed gigs. I've never been one for music on the telly. Whether it be something like Other Voices, or live footage of a festival or whatever people were doing with their streams.

that was me for ages too. But I loved it for ages too. Then a combination of getting old, and too many shit gigs made me a lot more discerning about who to go and see. There were some years I'd easily go to 50 or 60 gigs (maybe even more). Now I'd be surprised if I make it to more than 10. And happily so.

I've been back at a load of open airs but the small weirdo gigs that I really like aren't even on the horizon yet. It's basically about 3 PR companies seem to be doing everything. I do think it's great that they didn't get into the EP moanfest and just found ways to make shows happen, but also, bring back small weird shows.

Yeah, a lot of this was the same for myself. I was starting to get kind of bored of gigs by the time they stopped. I didn’t miss them that much really. But then I think a lot of it was down to going to too many bad or just average ones. And also as well, pretty much everytime I went to a gig I’d end up around €100 poorer.

I’ve only got tickets for 2 gigs next year, Descendents and Jeff Rosenstock. Kind of happy enough to leave it at that

I played a few garden gigs over the summer and they were a lot of fun and I don't know we would have bothered without restrictions.

I have tickets to see These Charming Men, CMAT and Billy Bragg in coming months and am hoping things are back to normal enough to enjoy them as two of the shows are out of town.

had a gander at the Cork Jazz Festival line-up tonight and realised Matthew Halsall is playing on the Friday night in the Everyman. Been really digging his stuff over the last year. Bagged myself a ticket straightaway. Cannot wait to see proper live music again in the flesh. Especially quality shit like this.

I normally don't go to that many gigs, cos it means an hours drive home to the sticks afterwards, but went a bit mad buying tickets during lockdown as a kind of escapist fantasy. First one is Sinead O'Brien in a few weeks, then Black Midi, 2 Caribou shows, James Vincent McMorrow, Aurora, Billie Eilish. The last two are really for the kids though

I went. Didn't like them as much as on record - they just kept going for the loud DUUM DUUUUUMs for ages, all their subtlety was lost. Main singer reminded me of Scott Walker during the quieter moments. Crowd seemed to love it though, was a big moshpit and loads of crowd surfing. People are FUCKING MAD FOR IT after the pandemic, it seems

Support band were great - just a bass sax and a drummer. I think they were called "O"

Wasn't all that blown away by the when they played the workman's, thought they were pretty good.

I think I need to do a bit of work before going back to gigs. I saw videos of the heaving masses at Vicar Street, who looked like they were having the best time, and got a bit of the don't want to catch the bug heebie jeebies.
