Russia is operating in Syria following a request from Assad, the Turks may not like who is being bombed but shooting down a jet is extremely stupid. An image released by the Turks shows the jet was operating in Syria and briefly flew over a part of Turkey that juts into Syria. Yes they violated Turkish airspace but shooting down the jet of a country that you're not at war with is crazy.
Violating NATO airspace doesn't seem like it's from the smart boys book of war either, especially after a warning

Definitely not smart but probably inevitable when operating in a border zone. The Brits would stray across our border on occasion during the troubles, we pissed and moaned but that was it.
On your other post, Turkey have been supporting rebels operating in and from these villages since early on in the Syrian war, for them to moan about their lads on the ground in a different state being attacked is a bit much.
But yeah, dumping bombs on villages in such a manner is never right.

Turkey and the Turkmen are carving out a sphere of influence in northern Syria and are insisting that Russia recognize it. How severe the conflict becomes depends in part on how Russia responds to this setback for its war aims. It also depends on whether Turkish goals are more ambitious, to help the al-Qaeda-led Army of Conquest take Latakia. If Jabal Turkmen is a red line for Turkey, Latakia port is a red line for Russia.

Which is bizzaerly at odds with their communist history

Communism was only a blip in 1000+ years of Christianity though and even then it (Christianity) was used by the leaders when necessary, most notably during the Great Patriotic War to rally the troops/masses. Today's Russia is just resurrecting (if you'll excuse the expression) the idea of Moscow as the third (and final) Rome with the original Rome (and so Europe) long since lost to barbarism.
As Putin says...

"“Many Euro-Atlantic countries have moved away from their roots, including Christian values. Policies are being pursued that place on the same level a multi-child family and a same-sex partnership, a faith in God and a belief in Satan. This is the path to degradation.”
(Putin's divorce complicates that whole narrative a little but he tries not to dwell on it).
They've even rehabilitated the last Romanov's as saints

you love them oul russians

Well, there's no denying that.

That's really horrible of him.

True. I imagined it played well in the provinces though as he knew it would. And I also suspect he had an eye to the international audience, some of whom (particularly in Europe and the US) would agree with the sentiment* if not the harsh rhetoric.

*That was just one line in a section of a speech decrying the loss of Christian civilisation.

The continued isolation of Mother Russia
Good for NATO - but for Montenegro? :: Balkan Insight

At this stage they're down to Belarus (sort of), Armenia, Serbia (sort of), a few of the Stans, Iran (sort of) and China (well, they need Chinese money and China sees them as a source of fuel and advanced weaponry with even that becoming of lesser importance as China makes its own advances in the field. For China its a relationship based on pragmatism and opposition to the US, not actual friendship).
What next? They'll keep the crisis in Ukraine on the slow burner, ready to reignite it if necessary and they'll continue to operate in Syria, potentially stepping up their involvement if circumstances dictate.
Outside the military sphere they're selling (peaceful) nuclear technology to Egypt, Jordan, Hungary, Argentina and possibly others., so, while they may be down they're not yet out.

Polite Note- I'll try focus on China next time out, my obvious obsession with Russia is too obvious.

This is a funny little thread about the Economist and Putin that I didn't really want to have in the Ukraine war thread or the Economist/talking to your kids about drugs thread, so here we go:
