General election 2020 (2 Viewers)

Bit of a trend emerging of broadsheet political journalists being hired by FG/FF to work as specialist advisors to Ministers, with Fiach Kelly of the Irish Times and Susan Mitchell of the Sunday Business Post being the latest to jump ship:

Dunno if you can blame the journalists given how unsteady the print media landscape is at the moment but it's surely eroding the credibility of political reporting for so many of them to end up employed by the government (that may be part of the reason for hiring them, I suppose).

Its not even emerging - A lot go under the radar into these roles. Emerging certainly since the relationship between DOB and BA became less of a viable working mechanism. A lot go to PR these days too. I remember hearing the Neo Varadkar admin had 12 on the books.

i know two journalists who jumped ship and ended up as advisers; one lad went from the indo to become an adviser to eoghan murphy a couple of years ago, and another left RTE to be an adviser in some consultancy company for big corporates.

and it's still not clear what's going on. so there was something in the garda report that martin realised would come out in the wash, which cowen had not disclosed?

as an aside, wouldn't it be great if there was a lesser known brother called leonard?

I'd say at large MM has spent the past 8 years being kicked around the dail trying to rebuild the party from drunk cowen era, he got to be Taoiseach almost as a concession after all that and now another drunk cowen is making shit of his first week.

That's a guess but it could just be that simple. FF are shit, but they do probably at heart think they should be gunning for 80 seats.

I know Saoirse has already left this splinter/affiliated/whatever group but this reads about as vaguely as the Harpers letter, no?

it's gas to watch the jockeying in government over covid already. seemingly FG ministers have been shall we say, unkind, about FF's handling since the power swap, and there's anger in FF themselves at foley's handling of the return to school.

Saoirse is mad popular on twitter and all but given a whole party structure and the backing of ming she couldnt get elected, nor survive an interview panel that was pretty sympathetic to her. No elected green will say this in public because she's twitter famous, but eh, in any other job a diplomatic hr person might give you a fair few goes at leaving yourself before dropping the axe.

True as far as it goes, but going hardcore green left in the west of Ireland and expecting votes was always kind of an insane ask. I'd say she'd get voted in in Dublin no problem. Basically, until someone like her can get voted in in a rural constituency then it's clear to me that nothing fundamental is going to change.

I think if she'd been strong in interviews she'd have got over the line tbh - Once she got past 140 characters and was asked questions it was just awkward AF. i.e. I think someone like her could do it, but they'd need to be able to handle a discussion that goes beyond yaaaassss quuueeeeennn.

Yeah looks to me like JTG is basically just the greens trying to keep all their members that actually wanted them to make a difference

She didn't get elected because of the constituency she ran in. Kind of like going up against the Healy-Raes in Kerry, not much chance.
