General election 2020 (1 Viewer)

still waiting for government to HTFU and confiscate unused property.

that was the argument being put forward by some FG TD on drivetime yesterday in reaction to RBB's arguments on it.
so?

Edit: It's obvious the FG TD is being deceitful as they are effectively a low tax party however it doesn't take away from the validity of the argument. SF and PBB teamed up with FG and FF last year to keep the discount on Property Tax in the DCC area which is another one of the main reasons there will be a rise this year- it has been suppressed since it was brought in back in 2013.

anyway, the property tax is going to hit me, i think i left the valuation of the house rolling over in the guesstimate since we bought the place. will probably double the cost for us; but that's partly the disingenuous stunt the government are pulling.
they're claiming they're not increasing tax for the houses in the bottom two thirds of valuations, which is superficially true. but those houses have probably nearly doubled in value on paper so have all been moving up through the bands.

Both parties have said they if in government they would like to abolish property tax in favour of reforming income tax bands instead, making a fairer tax system which taxes the rich more than the poor. Both have also said they would go after vulture funds, investment funds, multinationals, etc to make them pay actual tax instead of letting them pay nothing. They've said it again and again and again and again, maybe you haven't heard it before, but it doesn't sound like less tax, does it?

there's no reason a property/wealth tax can't be crafted to deal with a lot of the issues that the left cite; e.g. one example RBB mentioned was someone on a state pension whose house is now worth a lot of money, and can't afford the tax. if that's the case, make it more explicit/easier for them to roll the tax into their estate, so it's automatically deducted from the will or the inheritor when they die.

it's never going to be possible to get the tax perfect, but that's not a reason to abandon the idea. no tax is perfect or without pitfalls.

Yes, taxing the baddies is a no brainer.. For me the most significant part of property tax is that it should be for funding your local council rather than state revenue so there is something very direct about it. Currently councils are much too dependent on developer levies/property sales etc. to raise funds which means they have a vested interested in permitting shitty developments that are of no value to the community..

PS if we are talking about reducing inequality how about a 100% inheritance tax?

LPT funding local council sounds great until you realise that areas with the most expensive houses would raise the most LPT and get the most funding...

Yup- there definitely would need to be a balancing out for rural areas and areas with low values. Would be interesting to see how it pans out per capita though- value is driven by scarcity, not just size/prestige. Most of the proper expensive areas propably have a low density so that wold slightly balance it out...

and that's another bone of contention for many people - that they'd end up paying more for a three bed ex council house in drimnagh than someone living in a mcmansion in leitrim is, even though the mcmansion is three times the size and costs far more to provide services to than the house in dublin.

There is some equalisation so councils keep 80% and then 20% goes to the equalisation

In relation to our own local area funding, sinn fein keep trying to cut it in the budget discussion and move it elsewhere. What really annoys me is included in it is the sinn fein Councillor elected for the local area.

We're a rural area so while population is low, there is a big area to cover

in a rural area you might not have broadband internet, get your bins collected, lack public transport, have little chance of affording going to college in Dublin and very likely to have to leave your local area to get a job, go to hospital or do nearly anything.
the nearest A&E to me is 35 miles away.

in Dublin housing is the huge issue
the biggest town in Leitrim has less the 4,000 people which brings its own problems.

I've long thought some kind of networking between different activist groups would be better than competing
for attention and resources. support each other on the things we are weak on rather than some young v middle aged / old crap.
