“Elliott’s stately compositions achieve a melancholic drama similar to Tom Waits or the Bad Seeds…” - Pitchfork

“Although beats have largely been ditched, Elliot’s flair for creating dark ambience remains: his soft, lullaby-ish melodies still sound like they are emerging from a howling gale.” – Stylus Magazine

“Effortlessly switching from late nineteenth century folk tales to crisp 2003 intricate electronica at the drop of a hat… scarily realistic without falling into the trap of overdoing the theatrics and resorting to cliché.” - Boomkat

Amongst the many products of the fertile Bristol music scene of the 1990s, Matt Elliott represents something of an oddity. When trip-hop was flavour of the month, Matt was instead exploring space rock and experimental drone with Amp, Movietone and Flying Saucer Attack. In 1996, Matt began releasing under the name Third Eye Foundation, and with his stark and brutal approach to electronica unwittingly became a pioneer of something called “drill n’ bass.”

While most people were struggling to transcend the electronic aesthetic that had become associated with the city, Matt married sampling and electronics with acoustic instruments, song and voice for the critically acclaimed album The Mess We Made (Domino Records, 2003).
Now, having left Bristol altogether and settled in rural France, Matt continues to release albums that have variously been described as folk, vaudeville and chanson francaise.

His fiercely independent approach has won him many admirers, and Elliott has completed remixes for Mogwai, Thurston Moore, Blonde Redhead, Tarwater, The Pastels and Yann Tiersen amongst others. Matt also continues to collaborate with long-term friends Hood, and lends his playing to many more records as guitarist, drummer, clarinetist, violist player and programmer.

Matt has toured far and wide over the last twelve years, recently appearing at Primavera, Benicassim, and Electric Picnic. He currently records with the Ici D'ailleurs label in France and Acuarela in Spain.
