What Have The Pythons Ever Done For Us?

TICKETS, DATES AND TIMES

Light House Cinema, Dublin What Have The Python's Ever Done For Us? | Light House Cinema

Pálás, Galway: What Have The Pythons Ever Done For Us? | Pálás Cinema

What have the Monty Python lads ever done for us? Absolutely nothing!

Well, maybe except Life of Brian – they did give us that I suppose. Not much else though. Ok, ok they gave us the sci-fi and fantasy epics of Terry Gilliam AND one of the finest documentaries ever made about filmmaking. What’s that, you say? One of the greatest comedy crime capers of all time, A Fish Called Wanda? OK, I’ll give you that. That’s it though…right? Oh go on then - I suppose Terry Jones did technically write Labyrinth…

In April and May we’re paying tribute to the Monty Python team by bringing you a season of films which will run in both Light House Dublin and Pálás Galway, from some of the greatest and silliest minds in the history of comedy.

This year the stars have aligned to allow Easter Sunday to fall on April Fool’s day. So, we’re kicking off our season with Life of Brian on Easter Fool’s Day, April 1st and the season will continue with a small selection of Terry Gilliam’s amazing work, screenings of A Fish Called Wanda on 35mm and Terry Jones-penned fantasy epic Labyrinth. We will also be screening every filmmaker’s nightmare, the documentary Lost In La Mancha – one of the best documentaries ever made about the perils of filmmaking.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE

Life of Brian

We’re kicking off our season with one of the best, most blasphemous comedies of all time. Life of Brian has had a long, rocky road with the censors but we’re very happy to present it here for you on the big screen to enjoy with all your friends. They really don’t get much better than this!

Brazil

Along with being a member of the Monty Python troupe, Terry Gilliam is one of the world’s most beloved fantasy filmmakers. Brazil is an innovative, head-melting sci-fi masterpiece. Jonathan Pryce plays a bureaucrat, in a retro-future world who tries to correct an administrative error and becomes an enemy of the state leading to a convoluted, increasingly wild series of events. A visual feast!

Monty Python and The Holy Grail

The Monty Python team take on the Knights of The Round Table in this comedy classic in which King Arthur and his knights embark on a search for the Holy Grail, encountering many, very silly obstacles along with some of the best one-liners in cinema history and of course, wonderful songs. Feel free to sing along!

The Fisher King

Terry Gilliam directs Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges in a whimsical comedy with a huge heart, The Fisher King about an unlikely friendship formed between a suicidal DJ and an eccentric homeless man. Hilarious, moving and unforgettable, The Fisher King is a multi-layered look and humanity and connection.

A Fish Called Wanda

Written by and starring John Cleese, this masterpiece of British comedy also features Michael Palin in a brilliant supporting role as K-K-K-Ken, the hapless sidekick. The ultimate comedy crime caper, A Fish Called Wanda features a knife-sharp, eye-wateringly funny script and an incredible ensemble cast. Kevin Kline won an Oscar for his hilarious turn as obnoxious American thief, Otto.

Time Bandits

Terry Gilliam directs this child-friendly adventure about a young boy who accidentally joins a band of time travelling dwarves, as they jump from era to era looking for treasure to steal. Time Bandits is a biting satire on consumer culture, an outstanding comedy and a rollicking adventure film all at once. Great fun for the whole family!

12 Monkeys

Going back to is dystopian roots, Terry Gilliam directs Brice Willis and Brad Pitt in this dark but brilliant sci-fi adventure about a convict who is sent back in time to learn more about a devastating virus that wiped out most of mankind. Visually stunning and masterfully directed, don’t miss a rare chance to catch this on the big screen.

Lost In La Mancha

This harrowing documentary follows the production of Terry Gilliam’s long-gestating The Man Who Killed Don Quixote which was to star Johnny Depp and Jean Rochefort. What was supposed to be a behind-the-scenes film turned into a horrifying glimpse into the perilous world of film production. Carried off with dignity and respect for Gilliam’s passionate quest, this is an entertaining and essential documentary about filmmaking.

Labyrinth

This is a film that truly has everything, singing, dancing, muppets, fire-demons, David Bowie! Written by Terry Jones and directed by Jim Henson, Labyrinth brings together two wonderful imaginations and the film creates a spectacular fantasy world and a balance of darkness and joy that has kept it feeling fresh for over 30 years.
