14 european qualifiers got to the World Cup right? 10 of those into the last 16.
14 non-european, non-south american teams - 3 of those into the last 16.

I think this is what should determine how many spots are given out for qualifying for the next world cup. And UEFA should get 16 or 17 at least.

CONCACAF and CAF get way too many spots in the world cup and this means their best teams are then artifically placed higher in the world rankings. USA 5th in the world! Nigeria 11th!! Cameroon 15th!!!

The reason they all have mad rankings is that they're constantly winning against shit teams, so they keep earning scene points or whatever, where as in Europe Ireland draw with Israel and Norn Iron beat the English.

Anyone who bases anything on FIFA rankings should be shot in the pussy.

Whta is nonsense is the Iranians and Saudis all have players who've played 400 times and scored 1200 goals or something. So would I if I was playing against a Saudi prison team who've all had a foot chopped off. Fuck Sake.

I do think that we could probably do with one less Asian team, the Saudi's and the Iraniens are just shite and add nothing to the competition. On the other hand, with the Aussie's possibly joining the Asian federation it should up the standard of the "Asian" participants in future competitions.

For shits and giggles, I took a look on the official Fifa website and found that the likes of Iran and Tunisia are ranked higher than ourselves. Bahrain are higher than Scotland and Belgium! Norn Iron are placed below the likes of Rwanda, Haiti and Sudan...? I'm pretty sure the North would be higher up the rankings if they were playing a load of spear-chuckers once a month.

Better WC? I'm not into the aesthetics, just think 5 african teams and 4 from central and north america is too many considering their ability. You don't see the South Koreans and Saudis in the rugby world cup like. If there were global qualifying groups then a much higher percentage of europeans sides would qualify, not that I think there should be global groups - travel, money, organisation etc. nightmare.

But a better WC? Groups D, G and H were laughably weak. The smaller confederations have been given every chance but look at the last eight... 'nuff said. The FIFA heads thought the African sides would have made a serious impact at this stage but they haven't really made much progress in the last 16 years from what I can see when you consider what the Cameroons and Nigerians managed in the past. Maybe they're on the cusp of something though, the Ivory Coast and Ghana both looked useful in the group stage this time around. But Tunisia, Angola, Togo, Saudis, T&T, Costa Rica and Iran... muck.

I think the continent where it's played has a big effect.

Brazil are the only team to win outside their own continent - which says a lot.

South Korea and Japan did really well in 2002. I reckon the African teams will do very well in 2010 - possibly one getting to the final.

It has to have greater involvement from a variety of confederations - or else it's not a World Cup.

Anyway, Ireland aren't as good as the Ivory Coast or Ghana. Or even Cameroon or Nigeria. Maybe there should be more African teams in it?
