I hate to start another 'is this gig happening or wha?' thread but this came buried in the recent Road mailout:

October 14th - Faust - National Gallery - €13/11

Can anyone light any shed on this?

Bump.

I thought I'd give Faust a spin and see what the deal is. I've listed to discs 1 and 2 of The Wümme Years: 1970–1973 so far, a bit early to make a call.

What do you lads think?

They are one Fontenoy the greatest bands in the universe. Give the first two albums some time, they invent whole worlds of sound there.

Faust IV is amazing, definitely their most accessible but rather than being a softening of their power, it absolutely blows me out of the water. I bought it based on their reputation when i was in secondary school and it basically ruined most other bands on me. There’s a great 2-disc reissue of it with alternative takes and radio sessions (some overlap with the Wumme BBC disc).

The album with Tony Conrad is good but if you can find the live album they did (Outside the Dream Syndicate - Alive) with Jim O’Rourke, that’s the one to listen to.

The stuff from the 90s is good and they’ve gotten even better in the 00s when they split into two different groups, both called Faust. My preference is for the slightly mental rock of the Jean Herve Peron Faust compared to the more staid, compositional Faust of Jochen Irmler. Both have terrific moments and off days though.

One of my goals is to see them (either version) live. I’ve tried to organise a gig here but it’s never worked out. Fingers crossed it will happen someday.
