The olympics needs to go back to basics and be just about track and field again. Its padded out with the worst kind of boring shite.

Cycling is my favourite sport in it, but it makes zero sense for it to be part of the Olympics. It must be the only sport in it that features the top professionals of the present time. Even shite like soccer has been watered down to be just under-23 (apart from that being allowed a guest player bullshit - like Beckham).

Put it back on the track, make it a week long, happy days.

If you think there are too many sports in it now, they used to have an Art category including things like painting and town planning (between 1928 and 1948):

Jack B Yeats won a Silver Olympic medal for that Liffey swim painting:

Olympipod is a very enjoyable podcast. I'm sure most people are aware of Ruth Fitz on twitter. Its her and a lad who played (I think) Olympic handball for Ireland. They go through those early Olympics and talk about the quirky events that took place, as well as some of the characters from them.

Like this guy, for example

who is the founder of the modern Olympics, and who won an Olympic medal in literature in 1912 for writing a poem. I mean, fucking Yeats was a year away from writing September 1913 at that stage. Why couldn't he have gone and won a medal in the Olympics? Useless shite.

Men's cycling TT finished in last 20 minutes.
Very close between at least 6 riders with lap to go and silver to 5th was settled a tiny margin.

Nico made no impact but no one else would done any better.

Women's TT finished about 4:30 am. so just about to watch recording now

I thought Ryan Mullen would get the call. Don't know what he's up to these days but TT was always his forte.

Sorry! Totally forgot about him.
You're right Mullen's a TT specialist of course.
I wouldn't be surprised if they just. stuck Nico in because he was there for the RR anyway. Save the cost of bringing another rider. A lot of teams had a 'spare' rider, in case one of the first team couldn't start. For the women's RR, Tiffany Cromwell started, but I think she was only brought as a backup originally.

Eurosport (just about 11 am) had a conversation about the mental health of sports people related to Simone Biles withdrawal from gym team event.
It was a very token debate until Greg Rutherford spoke very honestly. Institutionalized bullying by coaches, pressure from sponsors and his own experience at the 2008 Olympics where he suffered a breavement immediately before leaving for Beijing, bombed in the final and ended up hospital in Beijing the next day suffering from extreme stress. Despite the people around him knowing his circumstances in Beijing he never got proper support there.
He also spoke about how dark some places he said often found himself in as an athlete.
Look it up if you get the chance.

Here is her own statement on that on instagram

Look’s like this was not hard enough ☺️🙊🙈!

I wish I could have made a different headline today 😢.

As I already said that’s the ritual which I chose pre competition !
My coach is just doing what I want him to do to fire me up!

hmmm, if a woman asked me to slap her in the face, no matter what the circumstances, I reckon I'd flatly refuse

That takes some lack of self awareness to slap anyone's face on camera.
Greg Rutherford pointed out this morning bullying culture is just seen as the norm with elite sports coaches.
How many retired GB track cyclists called out Shane Sutton? Not many and men he coached were quiet or said training had to be extreme.

The footage I posted of the Korean boxing coaches punching the referee in Seoul '88 earlier in the thread IMO was thy true self revealed.
If they did that on camera what kind of things were they capable of with their athletes.
They should have been banned from sport for life.
