Lets start with the filth.

Mansfield police officers smash window to save toy dog
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-17590000

A passer-by mistook "Little Willy" for a real dog

Police in Nottinghamshire have said they will be discussing compensation for a car window smashed after officers tried to "save" a toy, stuffed dog.

Officers received a call from a concerned passer-by who reported seeing a dog left on the back seat of car parked on Church Lane in Mansfield.

The police officers smashed a window in the Mercedes and discovered it was, in fact, a toy dog.

The toy's owner, Gordon Williams, 80, said police had done the right thing.

"I know Little Willy is quite realistic and if they weren't sure about it, they did a good thing as we don't want any more dogs dying in the heat of a car," said Mr Williams.

Mr Williams said Little Willy would be staying at home from now on
He said it cost £180 to repair the driver's side window and Nottinghamshire Police said they were discussing the costs with Mr Williams.

In a statement Nottinghamshire Police said: "The call [on 26 March] was made in good faith by a passer-by.

"In this case officers believed a dog could be suffering due to the heat of the day and its life was potentially at risk, so felt there was no other option but to enter the vehicle.

"This is a perfect example of why drivers need to think about what they leave on view in their car, both in terms of other people's perception of the objects and in a bid to deter opportunist thieves."

Mr Williams added Little Willy would be staying at home from now on.

South Africa: Fibreglass rhino dehorned by thief

SA detains rhino poaching suspect

A thief in South Africa has dehorned a fibreglass rhino during a burglary at a game reserve lodge in the Eastern Cape.

The sculpture was of the first rhino to arrive at Lombardini Game Farm, which runs intensive breeding programmes for rhinos, buffalo and sable.

"I was angry at the time, but it was also funny," the reserve's owner, Susan Lottering, told the BBC of the theft.

She said the 15 live white rhinos on the farm have already been dehorned because of fears of poaching.

South Africa has become the focal point of the rhino trade because it has between 70% and 80% of the global population - about 20,000 animals.

'Proud of her'
The fibreglass model, named Barendina, was hanging over a fireplace in the lodge at Lombardini Game Farm, which was broken into on Monday morning.

"We found it outside on the sidewalk with its horn cut off - the burglar was looking for money and they didn't find any money so I suppose their eye caught [sight of] the rhino," Ms Lottering said.

"It was a mould of the first rhino that arrived on the farm so there's a bit of history behind her and we were very proud of her," she said.

"She died of natural causes quite a few years ago, about eight years ago."

Police are investigating and have been to the farm, between Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp, to take fingerprints and photos, she said.

The number of rhinos killed in South Africa has soared in recent years to meet the demand for their horns in Asian traditional medicine, especially in China and Vietnam, where they are thought to have powerful healing properties.

But scientists say rhino horns are made from the same material as fingernails and have no proven medicinal properties.

The black market price of rhino horn is now in the region of £35,000 ($55,000) per kg.

PSNI gun left in north Belfast house after raid
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-17752220

An internal PSNI investigation is under way after a police officer left a gun and ammunition in a north Belfast house after a raid.

The house in the Ardoyne area belongs to a 39-year-old man who had been arrested earlier in connection with dissident republican activity.

After the search, an officer discovered that a gun belt, which included a firearm, was missing.

It is believed it had been left on a child's bed.

Twenty minutes later, police returned to the property and with the consent of the householder retrieved the item.

In a statement the PSNI said they were "treating the temporary loss of this equipment extremely seriously and have commenced an internal disciplinary investigation into the circumstances of the incident".

The police said there were no children in the house at the time.

The householder has confirmed he intends to make a complaint to the Police Ombudsman.

DUP Policing Board member Ian McCrea said the incident was "deeply worrying".

"It is fortunate that this firearm did not fall into the wrong hands," he said.

"Officers are given strict training and guidelines to follow in relation to the deployment and handling of firearms.

"It is clear that in this case something has gone very wrong."

Armed police at Ysgol Plas Coch in Wrexham for traffic issues defended
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-18197666

North Wales Police has defended a decision to send an armed response unit to a Wrexham primary school to deal with traffic problems.

The officers, carrying guns, were spotted by parents collecting their children from Ysgol Plas Coch.

The unit attended after a local police community support officer (PCSO) called for backup as she did not have the power to issue parking tickets.

The force said the unit can be used to deal with traffic issues if needed.

Ysgol Plas Coch is in a busy part of the town near a shopping complex.

It has a history of traffic difficulties and police are frequently called for to marshall the situation.

Police resource

The local PCSO was there on Wednesday following complaints about illegal parking.

After calling for back up, the armed response vehicle attended.

North Wales Police said that the officers are a police resource who deal with all manner of incidents, including traffic matters.

The head teacher of the school, Gwyn Jones, said some people have made an issue of it, but he supported the officers who were only at the school doing their duty.

Chicago cops Taser 8-month pregnant woman for parking violation
http://rt.com/usa/news/chicago-taser-pregnant-rent-324/
Published: 08 June, 2012, 00:46

The superintendent of the Chicago Police Department says that the reason one of his officers used a Taser stun gun on a woman days away from giving birth because “you can’t always tell whether somebody is pregnant.”

At eight-months pregnant, Tiffany Rent says she would think officers would have been aware of her condition before they assaulted and arrested her on Wednesday morning outside a South Side drug store.

"I was standing at the squad car close enough for him to see that I was pregnant," Rent tells the Chicago Tribune.

The department says nothing was wrong with the ways officers acted, though. According to the police report, Rent “attempted to take off” after being ticketed for parking her car in a space reserved for handicap persons outside of a Chicago Walgreens when she was subjected to an electric pulse from a Taser gun. The maximum fine for using a handicap parking space without authorization in Chicago is $350.

Moments earlier, Rent tore up the citation and said, "I ain't giving you (expletive)," according to the official report. That, apparently, was enough for cops to use force.
Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy says he believes that it isn’t always possible to determine if a suspect is or isn’t pregnant so in the end it’s matter of upholding the law.
"Well, first of all, you can’t always tell whether somebody is pregnant. So, you want to use it where you are overcoming assault or preventing escape. That’s what it boils down to,” Supt. McCarthy tells the Tribune.

To do as much, Rent was shocked by the Taser, then dragged out of her car, forced to the ground and handcuffed — in front of two of her young children and her boyfriend. Joseph Hobbs, the father of the child, suffered a dislocated elbow and was also arrested by police for trying to intervene. Sharita Rent, Tiffany’s sister, tells the Tribune that some officers on the scene reportedly made “nasty, cruel comments” and suggested to the expectant parents that they “call Jesse Jackson.”

“How could you be that cruel to a human being? A pregnant human being?” asks the sister.

Later Wednesday, a nursing supervisor at the Roseland Community Hospital ran tests on Rent and said her unborn child appeared to be in good health, but the expectant mother still has concerns — she has lost two children during pregnancy before.

"That policy has been in effect for quite some time," McCarthy adds. "Whether or not the policy has been adhered to is going to be examined separately from the investigation into the use of force. So we’ll keep you posted on that, and we’ll see how it plays out.”

The latest incident follows an episode earlier this year in Dekalb County, Georgia where Officer Jerad Wheeler was accused of kicking a woman nine months pregnant, prompting her to receive emergency surgery.

Texas Inmate Loses Civil Rights ‘Vampire’ Suit
http://houston.cbslocal.com/2012/06/10/texas-inmate-loses-civil-rights-vampire-suit/

HOUSTON (AP) - A federal appeals court has rejected as frivolous a civil rights lawsuit from a Texas prisoner who argued he was being barred from practicing religious beliefs related to vampires.

Inmate Courtney Royal two years ago sued about a dozen Texas prison administrators and officials at the Hughes Unit where he’s serving a life sentence for numerous offenses, including aggravated assault, robbery and escape.

Royal’s nine-page single-space typewritten lawsuit, rejected Thursday by the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, said he wanted to practice “West African spiritualism and 18th Century Catholicism” marked by prayer to Africans reincarnated by blood. He argued it was no different from “unproven” Christian beliefs.

In the filing, Royal described himself as “Vampsh Black Sheep League of Doom Gardamun Family Circle Master Vampire High Priest.”

Band's 4am name prompts licensing officer and police visit

Confusion over a band called 4am and the time the group was due to perform on stage, prompted a visit from licensing officers and police to a local pub.
The Feathers in Laleham, Surrey, had advertised live music "from 4am".
Two licensing officers and two police officers visited the pub the day before to stop the performance, before being told it was the name of the band.

The pub's licensee, Kate Dillon, said she was "speechless" after the visit.
She said: "I was angry more than anything on the day. We've never had any need to call the police or had any trouble.
"If one official turns up that's funny enough, but if four people come into the pub like they did, it's absolutely ridiculous.
"When I calmed down a bit I thought it was absolutely hilarious. They made idiots of themselves really."

The two-piece band, of Joe Becket and John Adams, was named after a track by jazz musician Herbie Hancock.

Ms Dillon said she worried her customers would be put off from drinking in the pub after the arrival of the police officers on 1 June.
She added: "Why did they need to come around instead of calling me first? It's a waste of taxpayers' money."

A spokeswoman for Spelthorne Borough Council said: "Following a visit to the Feathers, there was no cause for concern.
"The visit was carried out following seeing an advertisement which mentioned 4am. On investigation, this was part of the name of the band.
"Licensing staff often make such visits, either pre-arranged or not and the Feathers was one of a number of premises visited that night."

Jose David Diaz-Marrero Steals, Snorts Dog And Human Ashes In Florida

One of three Florida men who stole and snorted human and dog ashes was sentenced Friday to more than eight years in prison. Jose David Diaz-Marrero, 20, committed a series of burglaries between December 2010 and January 2011, authorities told the Ocala Star-Banner.

In his most heinous crime, Diaz-Marrero, with his accomplices Waldo Soroa and Matrix Andaluz, discovered several urns filled with ashes in a Silver Spring Shore he burglarized on Dec. 15, 2010. The group reportedly thought that the urns contained crushed-up pills, so they tasted and snorted the contents. The men also reportedly stole $1,500 worth of jewelry, a laptop and a 42-inch television.

The homeowner returned that night to find that the urns -- which contained the ashes of her father and two Great Danes -- were gone.

Diaz-Marrero pleaded guilty in June to four burglaries, including the ash theft, according to WPBF. He reportedly apologized in court on Friday.

Sussex Police restraint of disabled girl, 11, probed
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-21382952

Sussex Police is being investigated over the treatment of a disabled 11-year-old girl who was physically restrained on five occasions.

The girl, who has Smith-Magenis Syndrome, was arrested four times and twice held overnight in police stations.

Her mother complained about her treatment to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Sussex Police said it welcomed the IPCC scrutiny and supported its inquiry.

The girl came into contact with police between 2 February and 2 March last year in Horsham, West Sussex.

She was held under under the mental health act on 9 February, arrested on suspicion of assault seven days later, held over a public order offence on 29 February and arrested in connection with criminal damage on 2 March.

'Degree of force'
The girl's mother complained in July 2012 about the methods of restraint used on her daughter, which the IPCC said appeared to have included handcuffs and leg restraints, and the decisions to hold her in police cells overnight.

Commissioner Mike Franklin said: "The IPCC investigation is examining the nature and circumstances of the officers' interaction with the girl to determine whether the degree of force and method of restraint used by officers was appropriate and in accordance with the law, the officers' training and force policy and procedure.

"The investigation is also looking at the appropriateness of the decision to place the girl in police cells on four occasions and to refer her to the Crown Prosecution Service for charging on one occasion.

"These are very serious complaints about the treatment of an 11-year-old girl suffering from Smith-Magenis Syndrome and I will ensure that they are investigated thoroughly."

The Smith-Magenis Syndrome Foundation UK said major features of the condition include mild to moderate intellectual disability, delayed speech and language skills, distinctive facial features, sleep disturbances, and behavioural problems.

Somali pirate leader 'Big Mouth' arrested in Belgium 'sting'
A man alleged to be one of Somalia's most influential pirate leaders has been arrested in Belgium.

Mohammed Abdi Hassan, also known as Afweyneh or Big Mouth, was detained at Brussels international airport on Saturday after a sting operation.

Undercover agents had persuaded the Somali and an associate that they wanted to make a documentary about their pirate exploits.

Mr Abdi Hassan now faces criminal charges, including hijacking.

Prosecutors believe that the Somali was behind the seizure of a Belgian ship in 2009, reports the BBC's Chris Morris in Brussels.

Mr Abdi Hassan is also charged with kidnapping the ship's crew and with belonging to a criminal organisation.

'Notorious'
In January, Mohammed Abdi Hassan was reported to have said that he had renounced crime after eight years in the piracy business.

However, Belgian authorities say he made millions from his illegal activities, and will be held responsible.

Belgian vessels have in the past taken part in international missions against piracy on the high seas off Somalia.

In a UN report leaked last year, it was alleged that Afweyneh was "one of the most notorious and influential leaders of the Hobyo-Harardhere Piracy Network".

Jessie Mulligan Accidentally Texts Detective About Drug Deal: Cops
The Huffington Post | By David Moye Posted: 10/17/2013 4:31 pm EDT | Updated: 10/17/2013 4:31 pm EDT
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/17/jessie-mulligan-texts-cop-drug-deal_n_4117625.html

Jessie Mulligan allegedly texted a message to a narcotics detective offering drugs for sale. Now she may have to trade in her cell phone for a jail cell.

Deputies in Nevada County, Calif., arrested Mulligan on Friday after she allegedly tried to arrange a drug deal with a friend through a text for fentanyl, an opiate similar to morphine.

The message was actually sent to a narcotics detective who decided to take her up on the offer and arranged a meeting, according to 14NewsOnline.com.

She was arrested and charged with three felony counts, according to Nevada County Sheriff's Dept. spokesman Lt. Steven Tripp.

“She was surprised. She probably felt a little bit silly that she had contacted law enforcement,” Tripp said according to CBS Sacramento.

Tripp adds that the officers appreciated the tip. “When we get calls from criminals saying, ‘Hey, do you want to buy something?’ and it happens to be stolen, or of a criminal nature, sure, absolutely it makes our job easier,” Tripp said.

Mulligan's mistake isn't the first time an alleged drug dealer was apprehended because of the wrong text.

Earlier this month, authorities in Sparta, N.J., arrested Nicholas Delear Jr., after a detective received a text from his phone saying he had a quarter pound of marijuana for sale and wanted to meet at a pizza parlor.

In May, 2012, police in Santa Maria, Calif., arrested 39-year-old Reymundo Carlos Escobedo after he mistakenly sent messages to a police officer offering to sell methamphetamines.

An Italian student protester may end up in court after a photograph of her kissing a riot police officer started making the rounds and became hailed as a symbol of peaceful protest. She may now face sexual assault charges.

The incident happened during a demonstration against the construction of a rail link in the north of Italy.

Nina de Chiffre, a 20-year-old protester, had used the opportune moment to first kiss, then lick a police officer’s helmet visor. The moment was caught on camera, and the photo ended up going viral. It was hailed as an example of sending a message of love and peace and non-violent protest.

But the situation quickly went south for de Chiffre, after the Italian police union – COISP – ruled that the act was in fact sexual assault, and filed a complaint with a court in Turin, Italy’s La Repubblica reported on Sunday.

“We have accused the protester of sexual violence and insulting a public official,” said Franco Maccari, COISP’s general secretary, adding that the union “fully [expects] an investigation to start”.

Seeing the matter in a positive light is not on the cards, apparently, because “if the policeman had kissed her, world war three would have broken out,” Maccari continued. “Or what if I had patted her on the behind? She would have been outraged. So if she does that to a man on duty, should it be tolerated?”

Maccari appears very angered by the incident and doesn’t see any message of peace in it. He said it was “hardly a peace gesture, more a provocation.”

“A kiss is a positive thing,” he said, “but in this context, between these two people, it was just disrespect,”Maccari concluded.

De Chiffre’s own explanation of her actions may surprise her supporters as well, as it confirms Maccari’s assessment.

“No peace message… I would hang all these disgusting pigs upside down,” the young Italian wrote on her Facebook page, Italian media reports.

Talking to La Repubblica, she explained that the kiss was an act of indignation at the police force for allegedly beating up another demonstrator.

De Chiffre knew the police would not attack, following the kiss, she said. So she proceeded to touch the officer’s lips as well, while licking his helmet.

But now her act of defiance has not only brought her wide acclaim, which she apparently had not asked for, but also may land her a criminal record.
