PLAN IRELAND
MEDIA RELEASE
Plan Distributing Shelter Kits and Water Cans as Death Toll in Philippines Expected to Rise

Plan is now reaching isolated villages as well as the main cities which have been cut off from assistance since Typhoon Haiyan devasted large parts of the Philippines over a week ago. Plan staff are providing shelter and tarpualins to villages and towns in Philippines East Samar province which is about 240 km by road west of Tacloban City.
See video of newly released eye witness footage of house being washed away in East Samar.http://plan.ie/about-plan/news/video-typhoon-haiyan-washes-house-away-1

Plan is continuing its assessment in the worst hit zones with response teams working in Tacloban and Roxas City. A consignment containing thousands of blankets, tents and tarpaulins are due to arrive tomorrow.

Plan Ireland has launched an emergency appeal, seeking donations to help with the emergency effort. Donations can be made at www.plan.ie or by calling 1800 829 829.

Speaking from the Philippines, Plan Ireland’s Dualta Roughneen said;
“The situation on the ground here is extremely stark. Our colleagues in some of the worst hit zones have reported dead bodies littered by the side of the road mixed in with the rubbish and children begging in the streets. All of Plan’s programme areas have been hit. Plan has over 40,000 sponsored children in the country, with 170 children in the Philippines sponsored by Irish people.
The challenge now is to start getting aid to the right people in the right areas. Plan Ireland is already dispatching supplies of tents, plastic sheeting and tarpaulins. However, clean water, medicines and tents are desperately needed, so we are urging people to donate what they can.”
Even before the Typhoon struck we had pre-positioned emergency clean water and plastic sheeting for 20,000 people, but this isn’t enough.

Plan’s Stuart Coles, who is in the district said;
In some areas, the true scale of the catastrophy is only now becoming clear. For the last week, many of the towns and villages in East Samar were Plan has programmes have been completely cut off and communications limited. For instance, here in the remote village of Baranagai just one house has been left standing. A confirmed 22 people have died here, 12 of them children.

Plan is currently the only international NGO operating in the area and we have distributed tarpaulins which can be seen everywhere. People are fashioning makeshift shelters from whatever they can salvage to patch up remains for their homes.

Plan has been working in the Philippines for more than 50 years in over 400 communities and has an extensive experience of responding to natural disasters in this country.
