Dunno if there was a thread like this before, but there is now. No shite allowed! May as well start with a bit of the old Ludwig Van. I've just been listening to this:

Excellent, I'm on the look out for good classical music but I don't know where to start. Theres a piece called Louange à l'Immortalité de Jésus by Messiaen from Quatuor pour la fin du temps which is beautiful, a slow piano and violin thing. I'd post a clip but i cant check here if it's a good rendition. Apparently Quatuor pour la fin du temps was first performed in a prisoner of war camp in 1940 where Messiaen was a prisoner. That bit of history gives the whole thing a bit more welly I reckon.

so..this type of thing yeah?

OK this is famous as the "'Ovis Ad" music but I think it's a heartbreaking piece of music. The whole symphony is but this really stands out.

Great idea for a thread. The term classical is a little loose but no need to get too technical.

I'm diggin Debussy at the moment, sound quality on this isn't great but you get the idea.

My favourite Beethoven piece conducted by the great Leonard Bernstein. This piece was the haunting backdrop to the seminal film 'Picnic at Hanging Rock'

Glenn Gould is a demon on the old Joanna, especially playing Bach. I read he used to change the action on the piano to make it more staccato. Also recording him was supposed to be a nightmare cos he insisted on humming the whole time.

Vespers by Rachmaninov is brilliant from start to finish. Choral Music.

I think I've posted both these before.

The Quartet for the end of time is class alright, the whole thing like. That story is one of those stories though - apparently there is no real proof that this happened, so it's probably a load of bollocks, however nice it would be to believe. This performance seems to be a good one, and has the whole thing too!

Everything Glenn Gould did was class. I don't know if he changed action on the actual piano though - his technique was at such a level that he could probably play as staccato as he liked regardless. He had a particular finger technique that probably gave him as much flexibility as he needed that way. His humming thing is hilarious, I think it's great, haha! You can hear it on loads of recordings of him. Here is a bit of Gould staccato for ya sure, it's incredibly difficult to play this way and maintain consistency throughout!

This is going a bit too close to a shredding on piano thread.

The Rite Of Spring. AKA 'That piece that John Williams kept ripping off all the time.' Part of this was ripped off for the Jaws soundtrack (the sort of hunting music where they are chasing Jaws in Quint's boat, if that makes sense), but it's the Star Wars one that is really hilarious. One of the most blatant rip-offs ever - 16:08 if you want to hear that!
