Viet Cong Are Changing Their Name

Apparently someone who had a family member tortured in a prison camp in Vietnam got upset and a promoter cancelled one of their shows. Newsflash, America torture prisoners too! Should every band who reference America, American or the US Army also change their name? I don’t think Joy Division, Striknien DC, Agent Orange, Gang of Four etc necessarily promoted or represented the things or ideals behind their monikers either.

There was also white-boy appropriation cited (although the term viet-cong is an Americanism, the vietnamese didn't refer to themselves as such) as an issue, also members of the american-veitnamese community (in colleges they were booked) had problem with it.

So what? Why would you get offended by that?

Me personally? I'm not at all. Was just saying that they were getting it from a few angles over their name.
No not you. Why would one get a offended by that. I don't really understand. Now I'm not usually one to take swipes at the PC brigade but cancelling a show and the band subsequently feeling the need to change their name seems ridiculous.

I might be a cynic but I think the main reason they've done it is that it's made it more difficult for them to get bookings and as a result it's costing them money.

I did roll my eyes a bit in 2012 when The Morning Benders, from Berkely, discovered that "bender" is an archaic homophobic slur from another country and changed their name to Pop Etc. just in case they had insulted anyone, I really doubt that they had. Then they stopped making music I liked and got to not care about them at all.

I get the impression that they listened to people and weighed up how important the band name really was to them and decided that sometimes the right to offend isn't that important on the scale of things.

In fairness to the band, their statement is pretty reasonable. They don't want to offend anybody and they're not trying to make any big statements with their name so aren't bothered taking on the protestations. It's the idiots getting offended that I've a problem with.

Precisely but it's got to be very annoying nonetheless.

I see the band " Lynched" are mulling over this same question on facebook today. They're wondering how the name might go down in the states after a few youtube comments mentioned they weren't gone on the name.

I always associated their name with morning wood.

Also, that Irish band called Porn Trauma changed their name.
Haha, that's a great name.

I'm glad The Boy You Hit Is Dead never pussied out of that one. Or did they, they sort of fell off the face of the earth?

This topic is probably worthy of its own thread. Until recently I would have scoffed at the whole notion but like it or not people are declaring that these things upset them. Maybe it's just a symptom of the times we live in, maybe it's genuine offence I don't know, I'm a middle class, middle aged white guy, nothing offends me.

Interesting reply to Lynched on Facebook (and I feel a bit wrong fro sharing, but anyway,,,"

"Morning! Black punk american chiming in over here ...
When I first met y'all and found out what your name was I must admit that it made me uncomfortable and it wasn't until I knew more about you and your music that I understood where you were coming from with the name and didn't feel the need to bring it up. The term lynched has a lot of punch behind it though. Specifically for some black folks. So be ready for that. I don't think it's just an american thing to be scoffed at, though I understand that sentiment. I think playing out in the states amongst predominantly white scenes won't bother many or get you much feedback. But if I didn't know you and saw your name and that y'all were all white I would assume that y'all were just more insensitive/racist white punks of the world. That said, I think it gives y'all a good opportunity to talk about the origins of your name and open up any discussion around your name when you play shows."

Definitely worthy of it's own discussion. As I say, maybe I just don't understand. I guess the difference between the two bands mentioned so far, however, would be that there's loads of neo-nazi punk bands knocking about and Lynched probably wouldn't like being associated with them. Having a beef with a Canadian band called Viet Cong seems stranger to me.
