I have no issues with boxing being a fantastic sport when done well, and it having a long, glorious even, working class especially history... but the idea that it is "elemental" to being human, and we "evolved" away from it.... i'm not buying that one. Don't need to have a fight, OR A BOXING MATCH, about this but I want to register my disagreement with this scientific claim.

I'd love to disagree with you but...

Who's strongest and smartest, what's more elemental than that?

There's a lot more to boxing/MMA etc than that. I don't really like it, but I respect it.

Boxing's a fantastic sport
I went to a boxing gym for 18 months in my 20s. Never got good enough to do proper fights but I did do a bit of sparring and took plenty of shots to the head - got decked, got my nose broken. Have gotten occasional flashes of purple light in my left eye ever since. Obvs kind of regret it now on account of the CTE risk

It's all very well to say boxing is like playing chess, and is all about not getting hit, but like ... the other guy is doing his best to punch you, and he's fit and strong as fuck, and nobody starts off skillful and you're gonna get your block knocked off a thousand times before you get any good at it.

And even when you get good you're gonna be matched with people at a similar skill level, so there's absolutely no way you're avoiding shots to the head from people who have trained their whole lives to punch as hard as possible.

If my kids had ever wanted to do it I'd have been pretty sketchy about it

It's a beautiful sport to watch - I don't doubt that it's dangerous or even harmful.

But rugby and soccer and NFL seem to hold all their own CTE concerns
If everyone wants to stop doing it starting tomorrow cos they're worried about their health, then fair enough. Go with God. It just seems like a path forward for a lot of young fellas and ladies too, who might need a bit of direction at that time in their life

Just helping my very good personal friend An Post counter the idea that it is the domain of scumbags or whatever the original comment was.

Watching Vasyl Lomachenko is nice, I'll be honest.
Everything he does is crisp. He does this thing where he throws something at the lad in question, and uses that to get his weight onto one leg to pivot around the outside of the guy. So suddenly he's 90 degrees away from where he should be, and immediately throws some horrible dig into the poor bastards kidney or the side of his head or whatever.

Tyson used to do this crack too, but Lomachenko almost always does it.
So at the start of the fight you'd be thinking: I wonder when he's gonna start doing that twirly pivot teleoprt thing, presumably the opponent knows he will too.
You can even see it coming, there's the increased levels of taking the piss, all sorts of little things that are probably unbelievably annoying, and then a quick teleport to other side of the opponent to begin punishment time.

Amateur boxing is a very different game to the pro sport.
Family of mine heavily involved in local/regional boxing and definitely it’s something that has saved more than one kid from ‘the wrong side of the tracks’.
Crazy factions and politic in amateur boxing in Ireland though.

Not a celeb but if he had nearly 40,000 subscribers to his youtube channel I suppose he's somewhat notable.

Chilling degree of prep to creat an alibi by the man charged with the murder of Natalie McNally last year.

A 32-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of Natalie McNally in Lurgan, Co Armagh in December.

Stephen McCullagh, from Woodland Gardens, Lisburn appeared before a district judge in Lisburn Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Ms McNally, aged 32, who was 15 weeks pregnant, was stabbed in her home in Silverwood Green in Lurgan on December 18th.

Mr McCullagh was previously arrested on December 19th but released and ruled out as a suspect. He was rearrested on January 31st.

During a remand hearing that lasted almost an hour, the court heard Mr McCullagh, who has a YouTube channel, staged a live broadcast on the night of the murder, with footage appearing to show him playing the video game Grand Theft Auto for six hours.

A senior detective told the court that extensive technical examination of his devices by cyber experts has indicated the footage was pre-recorded and played out as if it was live.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Neil McGuinness noted that on the footage Mr McCullagh tells his 37,000 subscribers that he is unable to interact with them live due to technical issues.

Mr McGuinness told district judge Rosie Watters that while Mr McCullagh denies involvement in Natalie McNally’s murder, he has conceded in police interview that the purported live stream was pre-recorded by him days earlier.

“At the conclusion of the interview process last night or early this morning, after consultation with his legal representative, Mr McCullagh has given us a written statement essentially and in that written statement he has acceded that that live stream was not live and was in fact recorded by him on the 13th into the 14th of December and that he had streamed it on the night of Sunday the 18th,” he told the court.

The court was told that Mr McCullagh was initially arrested in the wake of the murder but then ruled out as a suspect on the basis of the alleged live stream alibi.

He said Mr McCullagh, who works in the local media industry, then went on to interact with the McNally family in the weeks that followed.

He claimed the accused left his phone in the home of Ms McNally’s parents and recorded 40 minutes of audio.

Mr McGuinness said he believed this was Mr McCullagh attempting to determine if the family suspected him of involvement in the murder.

Ms McNally’s parents Noel and Bernie and brothers Declan, Niall and Brendan were in court as this evidence was outlined.

Mr McCullagh watched proceedings via video link from a police custody suite. He did not speak at any stage in the proceedings.

He was remanded in custody to appear before Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on February 24th via video link. – PA

A prominent Irish celebrity has appeared in court charged with several child sex offences.

The defendant, who is now aged in his 30s, appeared before a sitting of Dublin district court this morning following an investigation by specialist detectives in the capital.

He was arrested and brought to court to be formally charged with three counts of the defilement of a child under the age of 17.
Following his appearance at the Criminal Courts of Justice on Parkgate Street he was remanded on bail to appear again on March 24.
The man is well known in entertainment circles but cannot be identified for legal reasons.
All three charges relate to offences that allegedly occurred over a decade ago.
The first charge alleges that he engaged in a sexual, namely oral sex, with a child under the age of 17 at a specific location in Dublin in August 2010.
The second charge states that he engaged in the same sexual act with a child at an unknown location in Dublin on December 14, 2010.
The third charge states that, between August 2010 and January 23, 2011, at an unknown location within Dublin, the man did engage in a sexual act, namely oral sex, with a child under the age of 17.
All offences are contrary to Section 3 (1) of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2006.
The maximum sentence under the legislation, on conviction, is five years imprisonment, and ten years if a person found guilty of the offence was in a position of authority.

The accused was brought in to court in custody this afternoon and appeared before Judge John Brennnan.
A detective from the Garda Protective Services Bureau gave evidence of his arrest, charge and caution. He said the man made no reply to either of the three counts after caution and was handed copies of the charge sheets.
The detective garda told Judge Brennan the Director of Public Prosecutions directed trial on indictment on all charges. This means the accused will be sent forward for trial to the circuit court when a book of evidence is available.
The court heard there was also consent by the DPP to the man being sent forward on a signed plea of guilty if that arises.
The accused, who was represented by a barrister, was granted bail after the court heard there were no garda objections subject to conditions, including a prohibition on contact with the alleged victim.
Judge Brennan set bail in the man's own bond of €500, with no cash lodgement or independent surety required.
No legal aid application was made.
He was not required to address the court during the brief hearing and was remanded on bail to appear in Dublin District Court again on a date in March, for the service of a book of evidence.
He walked from the Criminal Courts of Justice less than two hours after taking up bail.
A garda spokesperson said: "Earlier today, An Garda Síochána charged a male who has now appeared before Dublin District Court.
"As the District Court Judge has imposed reporting restrictions, An Garda Síochána has no further comment."

RTE were more specific with the age which ruled out my first guess.
