C JOYNES
(Bo'Weavil, Great Pop Supplement, Leith Hill Recordings, Palimpsest)

English acoustic guitarist C Joynes, a resident of Cambridge, has released 3 albums, issued by the likes of BO' WEAVIL and THE GREAT POP SUPPLEMENT. His LP 'The Running Board' on THE GREAT POP SUPPLEMENT sold out within 48 hours of release. He has also recorded a live broadcast session for Andy Kershaw on BBC Radio 3. He has played extensively across the UK and Ireland, sharing bills with performers including: Alasdair Roberts, A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Jack Rose, Sunburned Hand Of The Man, Sir Richard BIshop and Steffan Basho-Junghans.

"Joynes has a heavy thumb-led finger-picking technique that harks back to traditional country-blues and early ragtime. However, he uses this technique to explore alternative melodic traditions: the English folk-tune; North and West African music; elements of classical Indian music; proto-minimalist and impressionist musics from the European classical tradition.

"His approach to the recording and compositional process contains a subtle and unassuming experimentation, at times including collaged fragments, field recordings, processing, en-plein-air recordings, and cut-and-paste. He has a penchant for reworking over-familiar pieces and stripping them of their kitsch and cliché, presenting them afresh. Joynes' music is instinctive, placid, and evokes a certain simplicity and naiveté." - Rhodri Davies

PRESS

"C Joynes is an English acoustic guitarist from Cambridge, but sounds as if he was shaped by the same influences as the new school of American primitivism that Jack Rose represents. Joynes's own sleeve notes acknowledge the debt of his Christmas Medley to John Fahey's festive novelty albums, but he's more than just an imitator. Pirandos Tolos's unique tone was supplied by a broken round-backed mandolin. The East African-flavoured Night On Djerba suggests the jazz standard A Night in Tunisia left out overnight in the desert and slowly circled by vultures." THE SUNDAY TIMES

"British finger-style guitarist C. Joynes calls his music 'Anglo-naive and contemporary parlour guitar.' That's a fair description of the intimacy inherent in his approach. And it also hints at the open-air mystery of what he does, his epigrammatic re-castings and re-readings of widely-travelled folk melodies and rhythms from a variety of traditions suggesting shared memories that might be intensely universal while seeming strangely out of reach. 'God Feeds the Ravens' unfolds as a seamless listening experience." DUSTED MAGAZINE

"I find a simplicity and honesty in Joynes' ripple-picking that stirs me mightily. A fine collection of slow and sad music which somehow seems uniquely English too." THE SOUND PROJECTOR

"Indeed, there are moments of such elusive beauty on this great side that a track like "Grey Eyes" almost feels like the first genuine follow-up to the beautiful sonic portraiture of Loren Mazzacane's Hell's Kitchen Park." VOLCANIC TONGUE

"Without doubt the most promising - and sadly still unsung - post-Takoma guitarist doing the rounds right now. Some absolutely stunning compositions, extremely well-crafted and delivered with pure warmth. Last chance to get this awesome CDR, one I cannot recommend enough" SECOND LAYER

CIAN NUGENT
(Tompkins Square, Incunabulum, audioMER)

Cian Nugent is a young guitarist from Dublin. During the last year he has undertaken tours across Europe, the UK and Ireland, touring with performers including James Blackshaw, Jozef Van Wissem, United Bible Studies, The Family Elan and Thinga*ma*jigsaw. He has just released a new live recording on INCUNABULUM/audioMER records called "Childhood, Christian Lies and Slaughter". He was selected as the cover star for the third volume of the fantastic IMAGINATIONAL ANTHEM compilation on TOMPKINS SQUARE RECORDS of New York, who will also release his upcoming debut album.

PRESS
"The debut release from this young Dublin-based acoustic guitar picker, whilst calling to mind the traditional bluesy guitar sounds of the likes of John Fahey and Robbie Basho, also takes on board the more current experimental sounds of artists like James Blackshaw. The album features some truly sublime instrumental acoustic guitar sounds with references to early blues sounds, traditional appalachian folk music, eastern folk and even hints of early jazz sounds. It has a lovely meditative, almost hypnotic feel to it." - ROAD RECORDS
