BREXIT (8 Viewers)

Regardless of what happened with Corbyn, Starmer's stalinist purge of opposition is proof that he is a divisive figure when what we need is unity and he must step down for the sake of the party. You are a good man Starmer, but this exercise in purity politics will push people away.

Actually I will say that labour can make a good oppostion party as long as the one they oppose happens to be called labour. Why would they even bother the Tories at some inoppertune moment when they can be busy challenging there own leadership ? Or why should labour MPs even wait to see if they can get re-elected when they can walk out and form some other party during government ? And when the Tories had effectively kicked and locked them out of Westminster with the attempted prorogument what could labour MPs do ? Hang around for a bit and sing Jerusalem before somebody had to turn the lights off ? I'm sorry but the disfunction and poor oppostion of labor and especially when the Tories were doing so unbelievably badly has to be seen as a part of the crisis of the last five years and Starmer is absolutely right to have nothing to do with it. What would have happened if labour had won the election which basically was their promised second referendum ? It would have left Corbyn carrying on from May and Johnson which means the best that could be hoped would be a soft Brexit. In fairness to labour they may atleast have made the effort to make a deal with the EU which the Tories refuse to accept has any importance whatsoever. Given how much the Tories have indebted the UK and combined with their management of the pandemic the UK is in real trouble and will be for a very long time. As Corbyn said himself" What we need to now is get one with Brexit".

I have no idea what this means. Labour oppose labour? Is this some pun about the Labour party now being the enemy of workers?

There's a very strong argument that Labour lost because Corbyn softened on Brexit and agreed to go for a second referendum, if he had kept his 2017 position that he will follow the will of the people then maybe they would have won. It's not something the average columnist wants to talk about because they're all pro-EU and considering everyone was gunning to destroy him it probably wouldn't have been enough, but who knows.

Doesn't matter anyway, it's all over. Starmer is in charge and he's making it increasingly clear that he's not even a social democrat never mind a socialist. Maybe by turning Labour back into New Labour and making them indistinguishable from the Conservatives he'll manage to win an election. Best of luck to him, I certainly have no interest in supporting that. And you can spin however you like, Starmer's shtick was that he is a unifier, clearly he is not.

Good 2 know. It is true that the left is always busy fighting itself, just check out the concentrated and successful years long attempt to destroy Corbyn from within his own party.

It was almost definitely made up though, right? I've seen a few decent parodies of it at this point.

are those doing the destroying really in anyway "left" though?

I don't think those people would be particularly worried about not being called the left, they're quite proudly centrist and see the left as divisive. Which it is. I probably should have been clearer earlier, was using "the left" very broadly.

The self-identified socialists in the Labour cabinet are a very small minority and I get the impression Starmer and co would rather just boot them out then have to deal with them.
