BREXIT (9 Viewers)

from reading that you'd imagine that he normally lands in on horseback and whips people out of the way to get his pret.

in fairness though, despite the wester than west brit tone of it, theres a rattle of desperation in there. Like kinda clawing for something.

The Brexiteers go on about this being a democratic vote and how we must respect the vote of the people.

Let's look in to this a bit...

Because of the First Past the Post (FPTP) system that elects MPs to Westminster, the UK Parliament is simply unrepresentative. FPTP works if you have only two candidates running for election. Otherwise what often happens is that the candidate with the most votes, but not the actual majority of votes, wins the election.

Let's say there are 10 available votes and 3 candidates (John Doe, Mary Brown and Alan Smith). John Doe gets 4 votes while the other two get 3 votes each.
That means John Doe would get elected - because he had the most votes. However... 6 out of the 10 votes specifically didn't want him elected.

Since the 1930's every British government, except for the 2010 coalition of the Tories and the Lib Dems, had less that 50% of the overall votes.

In 2015 David Cameron's Tory government had 36% of the national vote. That means almost two thirds of the British public specifically *didn't* vote for the Tories. It was this government who called the referendum. I think it's fair to say they didn't have a specific mandate from the British voters to do this - not when 64% of the voters didn't actually want them in power.

These negotiations are dependent on the views of 10 DUP MPs. In the 2015 election none of them got over 50% of the votes in their constituencies.
In the 2017 election this has dropped to 5. But this government, with its "red lines" and not wanting to retain Northern Ireland in the Single Market, needs all 10 of these MPs.

Emma Little-Pengelly received 30% of the votes in her constituency in 2017. 70% of voters in the Belfast South constituency didn't vote for her.
Paul Girvan received 38% of the votes in his constituency in 2017. 62% of voters in the South Antrim constituency didn't vote for him.
David Simpson received 43% of the votes in his constituency in 2017. 57% of voters in the Upper Bann constituency didn't vote for him.

Basically we have 3 DUP MPs who can't make a reasonable claim to be democratically elected as representatives of their constituency. These MPs are preventing a reasonable deal about Brexit being made which could prevent or certainly alleviate many of the effects of a hard border on the island of Ireland.

And then we see Brexiteers lecturing the EU about being undemocratic...

I think the UK needs to work out how representative democracy actually works before telling others they need to be more democratic.

The Privy Council is the Queen's private council made up of the most senior politicians and leaders in the UK. It's a prestigious group of people who will advise the monarch on the most serious of issues facing the country.

The origin comes from the title given to the person who's job it was to wipe the King's arse.

This was a real job, where a member of the King's Court would be chosen to do this. Because they had such an intimate knowledge of the King, they were also told top secret information - they were the King's private council - or Privy Council.

There you are now... sure, that's it.
