How did he feel about it? About being in Ireland? Was he glad to get out of it?

I don't think he thought too much about it at the time. He grew up in a mining town, actually witnessed the cops beating the shit out of miners on the street during the strikes in the 80s. Joined the army to get out of there, when he left he became a full-on hippy, spent time at the Newbury Bypass protests and got harassed by cops himself. He's pretty respectable these days though, hates hippies as much as the next man
