Getting shot is the best excuse.

Someone threw it at me once.
"Why are you late?"
"Someone got shot bruv." He was quite stern about it.
"Ohhhhhh, ok"

Hours later I was like "You ok man, you wanna talk? Sorry if I was a dick earlier, I didn't know".
He laughs at me and explains that he was late because his bus got diverted. It was diverted because someone got shot somewhere along the bus route. Nothing to do with him at all. He could have said "My bus got diverted", but "Someone got shot bruv" has much more impact.

chap i know was a witness to a gangland hit from the top deck of a bus. he'd have been able to cover all bases there.
