I have never seen anyone do whatever that is on the left. Is it an American thing or did old fogeys learn it like that here?
Never mind, from reading the comments it’s cleat that the teacher wasn’t suggesting to do all that carry on every time but that she was teaching the principles of multiplication. For a few minutes there I thought that Americans actually drew out a big box whenever they were multiplying numbers.

It’s their “common core” method of teaching multiplication. I get the reasoning of teaching stuff from first principles or whatever, but it seems... unnecessarily complicated.
