About The Whatmans

The Whatmans are Navan's latest indie rock outfit. They consist of John Brennan on vocals, Padar Mulvey on guitar and backing vocals, Francis "Frany" McGinn on bass and Aidan Carolan on drums.
With the release of their debut single 'Devil Shoes' catching the ears of some top music reviewers, and record companies from Warner Bros and Universal to MTV2, the band are quickly making a name for themselves as the next big thing.
Dubbed as "what Oasis would sound like if they had imagination", the band live up to their hype through their live shows and of course the most important thing, their music.
"This year we plan to achieve all we set out for," states padar Mulvey
Reviewer Dermot Long wrote: "From songs like 'One For The Music', 'Korea' and one of the best written songs 'Soldier', the band have captured a sound that U2 would be proud of. John Brennan has vocal chords that will make you sit up and take notice. His voice is different to everything else and to me its roughness and readiness to destroy any microphone is a gift most singers can only dream of. He has the arrogance and confidence on stage of a young Manchester hero, and uses every lyric to full effect.
Padar Mulvey, the guitarist and writer of the tunes for The Whatmans, has a sound that rages through the room like a runaway steam train. From jingle jangle sounds to roaring, flaming guitar solos, Padar pushes his guitar to the limit and beyond. His passion is evident in every guitar riff, and lyric he writes.
"Frany McGinn and Aidan Carolan are the sort of rhythm section that every band should have. Bass riffs that are as catchy as swine flu and drums that bring a new meaning to the word pounding, these two know how to play their instruments." Songs can be downloaded on iTunes and other on-line music stores. The video, which can be viewed on YouTube, was directed by Vincent Gallagher and produced by Dave Leahy.

Single Review: The Whatmans Devil Shoes----> Irish based indie rock outfit The Whatmans. The single entitled Devil Shoes features three tracks, Devil Shoes, Follow Me and Casino Unplugged. The lead single Devil Shoes sees the release off to a good start. A heavy rock n roll concoction of ardent drumming and rampant guitars, Devil Shoes is a well produced track that has enough mainstream polish to garner some serious radio play. The second track Follow Me has a strong almost anarchical vibe to the music. Lead singer John Brennan provides tough, no nonsense vocals against a persistent hard rock inspired beat. In some ways Follow Me is reminiscent of Britpop purveyors Oasis at the height of their game during the mid to late nineties. Following on from the heavier first two tracks Casino, opening with a mellower lead guitar could easily be described as the acoustic slow burner of the release. The melody is consistent throughout backed by a slightly textured rhythm while the lyrics provide a despairing look at today’s world. At times Brennan’s vocals are restrained but have enough conviction to carry the track through. Devil Shoes is a release well worth your time and attention, you won’t be disappointed

MUSIC REVIEW UNSIGNEDS REVIEW OF EP "FOLLOW ME": "Dublin's indie rock outfit The Whatmans have crafted this three track stunner yeah.. you might say" well hell yeah let your hair down and get ready to be rocked, the first track "Follow me" has all the ingredients of indie pop culture right to the bone, I love the second track "Guns of Dublin" its nice to hear some Thin Lizzy still lives on in upcoming acts today and this track hits you in the face with its melodic bass groves and thumping drums. the third track I am rock and roll has a high end rock beat but has just a hint of merseyside beat! class."

As well as debut single, Devil Shoes, The EP also has the wonderfull tracks Follow Me and Casino,

The single are available for download on i-tunes.

What a great Monday. I've discovered two hilarious Irish bands already and it not even tea-time.

A band from Navan, looking for a gig in the Isaac Butts, appealing to the people of Cork? This is definitely the most cosmopolitan thread i've been in today.

a gig that happened four years ago and all.

So you:
A. want to play a gig in Isaac Butts (which is in Dublin) and
B. want to play a gig that happened in 2004.

I think I'm starting to realise why you're having a hard time getting a gig in Cork.

We played a gig in McGruders with those dicks.
The room was pretty much full of musicians who were all waiting to play & these fuckheads refused to stop playing til the soundman cut the PA.

The band motto seems to be "If we act like big enough tits, people will assume we're a real band"

Ah, lovely. The opposite to "I know them and they're sound".
Gladdens my heart to hear that.
