BACKLASH /// Bodytonic 5th Birthday /// Thursday 20 September /// Pod

JG Wilkes (Optimo DJs, Glasgow)
As the year heads towards its end we're delighted to announce return of our all time
favourite Backlash guests Optimo. This time represented by Belfast's Jonny Wilkes.

While acts like 2manyDJs seem all but content to repeat themselves and take the cash,
Optimo are constantly moving forward and pushing boundaries. Their Sunday night at
Glasgow's Sub Club which constantly throws up musical surprises is still a sell-out every
week with a hugely loyal and diverse clientele.

The Optimo's combine everything from driving techno to northern soul, New York post
punk to industrial stomp. They're probably best known for their Kill The DJs mix cd,
which illustrates the genius not purely of the tracks selected but the way they are
combined,

Their more recent Psyche Out DJ Mix on Eskimo Recordings combined pyschadelic
freakouts from acid rock pioneers Hawkwind, bleep rave from Sweet Exorcist and
dark neu-wave pop from Throbbing Gristle. Again Its not their eclecticism that makes
their mixes special but the way they find common ground between different genres
and combine them to create a mood that remains constant throughout.

Their import only Walkabout mix has been finally given a proper release on the
Endless Flight flight, look out for few of them been given away on the forum soon.

WhoMadeWho (Live)
Not only have we JD Wilkes lined up for the Pod club room, We'll be opening up the entire
Pod complex for the night. The Crawdaddy doors will open up at midnight for a mix of
funk, disco, punk and house with WhoMadeWho.

WhoMadeWho brought themselves to most people's attentions with their second 12". The
hilarious (but also very good!) 'Two Covers For Your Party' which featured their take on of
Benni Banasi's 'Satisfaction' and Mr Oizo's 'Flat Beat', twisting both into punkfunk party jams.
Most people assumed it was just a one off release for a bit of fun and perhaps that was the
original plan but the popularity of the 12" meant there was much more to come. Their self
titled debut album soon followed on Germany's Gomma label. spawning tracks like 'Space
For Rent', 'The Loop' & 'Out The Door'.

WhoMadeWho are made up of (former Backlash guest) House DJ Tomas Barford who is the
drummer for the band. Tomas Hoeffding, who describes himself as a Bowie-loving bassist
who sings too! And Jeppe Kjellberg is the guitarist with a mean moustache! All combing
to create one of the most entertaining live-dance acts ever to grace a Backlash stage.
