chaotic drum editing shows how effectively percussion can be used in noise

beautiful spacey music. she's only done a small amount of solo stuff and is wasted in her main band.

Ah no, I don't think they're the kind of stuff Nuke Terrorist is looking for, I think he's looking for completely new sounds.

Tell you what though, all the interesting electro pop experiments of the early aughts eventually led to Robyn winning the prize with her Body Talk trilogy. I remember her Electric Picnic 2010 performance kinda blowing my mind with the two synchronized drummers and sheer energy of it all. So maybe thats worthy of this thread?

It all got watered down to hell after this of course, once all the LA professionals started getting involved and acoustic covers started happening. "Scandi-pop" is now just another genre you can reference, the era of discovery is long gone.

the CURE sampling tune by DIGITALISM was alright but maybe that's cause like early Cure stuff.

ROBYN I've been aware of for about 15 years and she is one of cleverest modern popstars. Yeah she is er... photogenic. lots Moroder influences filtering through their somewhere

listening to LITTLE SIMZ reminds me that my fave thing about modern pop music is the amount of swearing allowed. nothing wrong w/ bad asses with some Millie Jackson / Betty Davis vibes.

basically the problem for me whether it's pop or more experimental stuff is that production has gone away from what I like. it sounds a bit too 'digital'. all the things I posted apart from PRAXIS were very rawly recorded - I love distortion.
so basically I am an out of touch old fart who wants to know what's going but doesn't expect to like it.
hey, so far two people have gotten me to listen to 4 modern pop songs twice so that has to be a success.

here's some swearing from Kat off Nickelodeon:

I was looking for clip of Minaj where she managed to swear 14 times in 38 seconds during a concert but I can't find it.

here's PRAXIS again playing live on Polish TV(?) in 1996. the two DJs were the stars in the band. they seemed to be able to pull any sound they wanted out of nowhere.
in an ideal world something like this would be massive. completely passed me by at the time.

Enjoying this new one from one of Jim O'Rourke's go-to drum men Tatsuhisa Yamamoto.

It's electronic music, I guess?

Yeah i know what you're getting at, that kind of level of grit disappeared once computers got good enough, except for people purposely recreating it, which is just kinda slavishly retro and has its own problems.

Like i was saying elsewhere, I love the sound of a creaking drum machine, but not sure I love a faked one.

This probably falls under recreating old sounds from 1979 but it works for me, completely sank commercially and was ignored critically but apparently ended up in a FIFA game?

Dunno if something with guitars can be called "electronic" though, sorry if I'm off topic

Aw man, I'm slipping down a rabbit hole now ... don't watch this if you're sensitive to flashing lights and the like. Virtuoso rapping from Nicki Minaj over a frenetic and totally bananas track

i think that was the track which, when i heard it, my reaction was 'so the kids have left me behind and i'm too old for this and i'm totally fine with that'.
the notion of actually choosing to listen to that track is alien to me.
