Deafheaven is an American post-black metal band that formed in 2010 in San Francisco. Their music is described as “A dizzying hybrid of shoegaze shimmer, hardcore punk passion, emo vulnerability, and black metal intensity”. They have cited a wide range of musical influences, including, but not limited to, Morbid Angel, The Smiths, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Orchid and My Bloody Valentine. In 2013, Deafheaven released their sophomore LP - "Sunbather".

Recorded and engineered by Jack Shirley (Funeral Diner, Comadre) and designed by Nick Steinhardt (Touche Amore) "Sunbather" deals with the profound sadness found in the quest for one's personal perfection. Serving as an artistic lucid dream of warmth despite the stinging pain of life's cruel idealism.
With opener "Dream House" George Clarke's tortured vocals familiarly intertwine with Kerry McCoy's hypnotic guitar work before crashing into a wash of post-everything melody. This leads to the moving instrumental "Irresistible" a track that carries a twisted indie-like sensibility buried beneath glittery layers of guitar and piano. However it is in the title track and beyond where the maturation and growth of Deafheaven brightly shines. In "Sunbather" they explore sonic peaks and valleys created by superb percussionist Daniel Tracy (new to the band for this recording). His inclusion brings new dynamics to light as an urgent pulse to the swirling musical chaos. Pushing bleak epic "Vertigo" and the dark emotional closer "The Pecan Tree" to new, awe-inducing heights.

"Part black metal scream, part shoegaze blur, all emotional overload, complete with a pink cover and a title implying that the musicians therein do, indeed, go outside, Sunbather was a mind-blower, bowling over innocent listeners with fist-pumping hooks that wouldn't sound out of place on whatever U2 is finishing up." - Rolling Stone

"Of course, folks will argue over just how black metal-- or even metal-- Sunbather is, and will discuss the "un-metal" pink cover art and the fact that Clarke could probably be a J. Crew model. These kinds of arguments are irrelevant. Instead, try focusing on how much better Sunbather is than any other black metal album released this year, and how it's, by far, one of the best in any genre. Or, maybe, just talk to your friends about what it feels like to listen to a modern classic." - 8.9/10 - Pitchfork

Without question "Sunbather" is Deafheaven at the peak of their creative strength and vision of their young existence. A masterfully crafted work of art that will be renowned for years to come.

Matt Hedigan (Hands Up Who Wants To Die?, Elk) on bass and vocals, Ruadhan O'Meara (Magic Pockets) on synths and Lar Kaye (Adebisi Shank) on drums took time out of their other bands to jam in Dublin in early 2011 after Matt had moved to the city from Cork. The trio's shared musical influences, the agile post-rock electronic punch of Trans Am, the playful noise of Devo and the low-down post-punk of the Melvins can be heard melded into No Spill Blood's spirited hurtling rhythms.
While their other musical projects contribute to the tempos, the tones and the textures of the music, No Spill Blood's sound is unequivocally their own. Repetitive Kraut-esque rhythms are goaded by O'Meara's buzzsaw vintage synthesizers, Kaye swaps his robotic guitar work in Adebisi Shank for incisively-charged drums and Hedigan provides the fuzzed-out low-end and beastly vocals. Or in their own words - “Heft, Heft, Synth, Heft, Heft”.
