Another close relative has turned up here.

I had the same thoughts yesterday! I was listening to a live album of theirs after your comment in the Marquee Moon thread and thought that it could be a musical sibling.

"Monty Norman has been credited with writing the "James Bond Theme" and has received royalties since 1962. Norman collected around £485,000 in royalties between 1976 and 1999. For Dr. No, the tune was arranged by John Barry, who would later go on to compose the soundtracks for eleven James Bond films. Courts have ruled twice that the theme was written by Monty Norman, despite claims and testimony by Barry that he had actually written the theme. "

I didn't know that mac demarco tune was a tribute/sample/lift

Some book I read said this was a sample, it is absolutely not a sample but I'd say there's a fair chance JDB took the strings riff and chord sequence and made it a manics song, kind of amazingly done tbh. Can never be unheard now

I have just discovered...

"On this day in 1998, Alice Cooper's publishers filed a lawsuit for copyright infringement against Paul Stanley and Bruce Kulick. The complaint alleged that the KISS song "Dreamin" (from the Psycho Circus album) sounded far too much like the Cooper classic "Eighteen," which was released back in 1971. It also suggested that Stanley must have heard the chart-topping single on numerous occasions since the two groups were contemporaries in the 70's 'shock rock' scene. The parties eventually reached an agreement on August 12, 1999 to settle their dispute. Details of the settlement were never made public, but it's rumored to have been in the low six figures."

( the last one being a dodgy Prince on-autopilot writing songs for his girlfriend )

anyway, rather than moan about it I think the only solution to this is that every band should write a new song to this little riff, Bo Diddley beat style
