2021 albums worth a listen.... (2 Viewers)

The Quietus have their lists up.

I must go through these. I struggled with new music this year.
had a look through their reissues list last night.

ended up buying their number 1 on the list for myself for Xmas. Some big Numero Group 5 disc set by Pastor T L Barrett - funky gospel stuff with a big sounding choir . Bits I listened to on Spotify sounded amazing. apparently his stuff has been sampled by many hip dudes.

Heard these guys, Trii Group, on Tom Ravenscroft on Radio6 tonight.

Fauxtronica? Is that what this thing was called 20 odd years ago? Bands playing electronic music sort of thing.

One of the lads out of Redneck Manifesto just brought out a solo album. I’m liking it, it’s kind of ambient experimental electronic stuff

'A Posteriori' by Gabby Wen.
Top top field recordings/archaic instruments/ quaint singing mix of things. Read about this when Theresa Wong and Ellen Fullman did the Invisible Jukebox for Wire magazine... finally got around to listening to it.

Plays this ancient Chinese stringed instrument called the gugin on it.

'Surface Industries I' - Paul Rooney.

Curiosity was twigged by a Wire magazine review that tied in colleries and founderies closing over a seventy period, the notion of a folk singer like Ewen MacColl collecting working class songs from the mines being dead, and comparisons to Robert Ashley's electronic music operas...

"these eight tracks have been created over a period of two decades, mostly using texts derived from call centre operatives. They occupy a space where folk music might have developed, up to that that juncture when meaningful tradition and continuities of locality dissolved into the glacial wastes of cyberspace, global capitalism and the unsolicited sales pitch."

I was expecting something far less accessible based on the review...surprisingly accessible and compelling.

Just found out about this ep by Meat Wave yesterday, it’s savage

'Passage in the Territorial Sea' by Olivia Block.

Woah there, Jesse. Wasn't expecting this...usually pretty uncompromising, austere and hard to engage with... this is fuckin' deadly. Track 4 has this gnarly motorik propulsion like a Steve Reich ensemble put through a blender sitting on a kitchen counter in Dusseldorf in 1974.

Info: 'Composed and performed by Olivia Block in 2021 on Korg CX3 organ, Organelle, tapes, field recordings and Mellotron.' Go on, ya good thing!

Last (?) addition to the 2021 album collection- this one has been melting my brain for a few weeks now. Basically 45 minutes of VU/Tony Conrad-style wobbly eyed astral travelling. Love it.
