2021 albums worth a listen.... (1 Viewer)

Frontman was a demon onstage, very engaging intense performer, but just the sweetest little button you could ever meet offstage. Think he went to Denver for his postgraduate studies which ultimately put an end to bracket retards bracket.
I knew him from TCD (hence putting them on in TCD once) and he was sound. I wonder if he ever came back? I’m not sure you could re-start a band like that and keep the same magic though.

they were super into the band-as-performance-art-encounter type of thing. I really don’t remember anyone else doing similar kinds of things in dublin back then. I loved it.

what was the name of the singer/frontperson guy? he used to post on here a bit back in the day. lovely dude.

edit: was his name aaron?

Be good if there was enough tracks unearthed for a compendium down the line, re: Retards.

Given the heat, here's some fingerpicking ones that might be apt:

Not as immediate as his exuberant duo record with Eli Winter from earlier in the year. They're looking to play here next year. I said I'd provisionally put them on. If the weather was like this, could just stick them on in the garden and charge five euro a head, stick some Perlenbachers in a cold bucket. Everybody wins.

This one isn't strictly a fingerpicking affair... lots of found sounds, concrete technique... ambitious release for sure, favourably reviewed in the recent Wire...or one of them. 90s Fahey when he was more into a tape collage/concrete thing hangs over it.

and

one for Dunderhead, out in August:

Doing a Stephen O'Malley on it with the tightarse number of tracks available. The hindsight is real - it's a post-rock thing.

Aron, I think. His name on here was Zebra Heart Attack. All that just came to me.

There's a bloke from Lucan on here who spells it that way - Aaron.

I bought some records off Aron. Ah yeah, he was a ridiculously pleasant fellow. But he must have had a coal black heart to pen some of those lyrics... one of the tracks available on yt is called U16 Whores.

The performance thing... yeah, must have influenced my own brief stint fronting a noise/____core unit. Think I went through about five costume changes in the space of twenty minutes.

I had the [retards] demo with the picture of the woman in pink on the cover.
it came in circle shaped CD box and err..... it got badly scratched and is unplayable.

the lyrics were written from point of view of creepy men as I remember

Yeah, probably...I guess 'Trouser Minnow' by Rapeman is the ur-text/template for that.

Odd album of sparsely treated slow marimba playing by a woman who has an Irish sounding name but is from Mexico and living in New York.
