Burnley v Blackburn is kicking off shortly.
in December 2000 the hated rivals met for the first time in 17 years. amazingly only one red card was shown.
Souness' side featured Duff and McAteer who says he loved it.

at 1:35 pm today on RTE 2, there's a doc. from 1975 on a week in the life of Shels FC.
the Cup final live coverage follows after.

I have done a good job of ignoring the world cup, we were out on the night of the draw and it was happening in the pub we were having a drink in, I didn't pay it attention because that'd have been rude.

The next morning I didn't bother to check, and made it to about 10 days ago until I learned about the England/Wales/Iran/USA group, which is a pretty good one for narrative.

Then yesterday evening I listened to the second captains preview podcast and they ran through all the matches that Ken Early will be attending while he's out there covering the tournament.

"Those sound pretty good too."

Shite. My own fault.

Gerhard Rodax (1965 - 16 November 2022)
Austrian striker who scored against USA in Italia 90. He was top scorer in the Austria in 89/90 w/ Admira Wacker and earned himself a transfer to Atletico Madrid that summer.

This is a great documentary. Guy put down a hard 4 years in between the 2 World Cup finals. What a player he was

opening track from first ECUADORIAN punk record from 1988. I only have a boot of this.

they qualified comfortably in 3rd place in South America.
less than 10% of Ecuadorians are black so about 1.5 million people are responsible for a lot of football talent.
apparently there is this one small area which has produced many top players.

the media in fairness are not easing up on the criticism.
they put the boot into in the Ataris big time today. Tony O'Donoghue, Liam Brady, BBC and all.

Ireland going to Malta = waste of time.
my own real criticism of Kenny is that we need to be better against really poor teams. Ireland never get hammered but seem to have problems against the weak teams.
Serbia qualified 'cause they have much better players - not much you can do about that.

41,000 people were there for the Norway?! give 'em all loyalty badges.

Iran's defence was terrible but they had 3 chances and managed to score twice.

proper match on now Holland v Senegal - both going for it.

yesterday Iranian captain Eshan Hajsafi bravely spoke out about the recent crackdown. he said as much as he could have. I wouldn't have been this brave.

Ali Daei has been extremely critical of the crackdown for weeks

this is obviously not without personal risk.
Hakan Sukur was an MP in Turkey allied to Erdogan. when they fell out he had leave the country for the USA.
He was last heard of driving for Uber.

Remember Saeed Al-Owairan? the Saudi lad scored after running past half the Belgium team in 1994.
But he was jailed in 1996 for drinking and socialising w/ women during Ramadan.

David Johnson (1951 - 23 November 2022)
Scouse striker w/ Liverpool, Everton, Ipswich and England, who won 4 Leagues and 3 European Cups at Anfield (1976-82).

Kalman Meszoly (1941 - 21 November 2022)
Hungarian great (centre half) who played in two World Cups inc. 1966 3-1 win over Brazil at Goodison.
Meszoly won 4 league titles with Vasas and had a long career as a manager inc. three spells w/ Hungary
inc. 1982 WC.

Jurgen Nolder (1941 - 21 November 2022)
60's East Germany star.

Cash is king.

My friend and myself were developing a sitcom where Cash was taken under the treacherous wing of Alan Pardue, where Pardue tried to corrupt Cash the Innocent with all his cretinous schemes. Turns out we were way, way off base.

Apparently he started for Poland the other day. So, I think him and Lamptey are my entry points into this WC.

Have yet to see a lick of it.

Neil Robinson (1957 - 24 November 2022)
Played in Division 1 for Everton and Swansea. Neil was apparently the first vegan footballer.
He became a vegetarian aged 13 and a vegan in 1980.

Surprised I didn't know any of this.

Just saw him in the far more interesting than I expected Banshees of Inishere... philosophical, absurdist, contrary. It certainly lingers.

Farrell. Class as always.

Here he is as a 22 year old model.

because of the satellite set up we had, I don't think I watched any of 98 WC on RTE.
all the other channels worked off one remote control but you had to change the two RTE channels on the TV itself.
but I realised RTE wasn't even tuned in when towards the end of 98 WC I went to see if I could watch the Tour de France rider presentation in Dublin. this must have been the case for a while.

I rarely watched RTE from 1991 to the mid 2000's. on Apres Match in the 2000's I wouldn't know who they were taking the piss out of. ''Pat Kenny?! But he has big glasses doesn't he?''.
I'd never seen Primetime because it sounded like a BBC One show or Wogan thing so I didn't know what Miriam O'Callaghan looked like.

Fernando Gomes (22 November 1956 - 26 November 2022)
Porto and Portugal striker.
Gomes scored over 300 goals in the Portguese league and was the single biggest reason for Porto's rise from having won only 5 Championships in the mid 70's to 30 national titles today.
Gomes won the European Golden Boot in 1983 and 1985.
After winning the league twice with Porto, Gomes switched to another upstart club Sporting Gijon before returning in 1982.
In 1986 a series of farcical events known as the Saltillo Affair led the Portuguese world cup squad to go on strike and saw Gomes who apparently opposed the strike installed as Captain, in an event comparable to France's implosion at the 2010 WC. Despite beating England in Mexico 86, Portugal managed to finish bottom of group F after defeats to Poland and Morocco.
The following year Gomes missed the 1987 European Cup Final after breaking his leg shortly before Porto's 2-1 win over Bayern.
He finished his career after two seasons at Sporting in 1991.
Gomes won 47 caps scoring 13 times and playing in the Euro 84 run to the semis.
Fernando suffered from pancreatic cancer.
