1982 World Cup. ITALY 2-1 ARGENTINA. Claudio Gentile fouls Diego Maradona 23 times.
this is every touch Diego had in game.

I also posted this when Diego died.
ashamed to say I didn't post this yesterday. also missed Norn Iron who beat Spain 40 years ago last Saturday.

Andy Goram (1964 - 2 July 2022)
Bury born 'keeper who started with Joe Royle's Oldham before moving to Scotland with Hibs and Rangers where he won the League five times in their best ever team.
Goram qualified for Scotland, winning 43 caps and played in Euro 92 and Euro 96.
As mentioned on thumped previously Goram was recently diagnosed with cancer.
Goram also played cricket for Scotland as a bowler and said cricket was his favourite sport.

Janusz Kupcewicz (1955 - 4 July 2022)
Polish central midfielder who won 20 caps (5 goals).
Kupcewicz was an unused squad member in Argentina 1978 but he played a key role in Poland's run to the semis in Espana 1982.
After missing the opening two draws with Italy and Cameroun, Kupcewicz started in the 5-1 win over Peru and the rest of the World Cup. Next Poland beat Belgium 3-0 (Boniek x3) and drew 0-0 with the USSR, before losing 2-0 to Italy.
Kupcewicz scored the winning goal in a 3-2 over France in the 3rd place match to earn Poland bronze.
this article has been much improved during today.

now speaking of Italy in 1982...

40 years ago today:
1982 World Cup Second phase. 5-7-1982, Estadio Sarria, Barcelona.
ITALY 3-2 BRAZIL.
my favourite moment is Claudio Gentile is getting skinned by Socrates for the first equalizer and Gentile is booked shortly after by Abraham Klein for his second bad foul on Zico.
Least fave moment is a ridiculous offside decision that saw Antognoni's goal disallowed late on.

RIP Paolo Rossi, Gaetano Scirea, Socrates and Waldir Peres.

In case anyone hasn't seen this... this guy makes groundhopping videos and he was in Dublin for the recent Rovers v Bohs match. the next day he visited the other stadiums. Pat's were having a fun day so he meet someone famous (but didn't know who was (!)) outside Inchicore.

all his videos are a bit naive like this but this was good fun.

Women's Euros begins today.

first match England v Austria is a sell out at Old Trafford but several smaller stadia are being used - Man City Academy/ Women's ground, Rotherham and Leigh (isn't that used for rugby league? i.e. mid season).
second match is N.I. v Norway tomorrow in Southampton.

Group D w/ France, Italy, Belgium, Suisse, have to play in Rotherham and Man City Academy.

also the time of year is strange; a men's tournament would normally finish about this weekend.
the tournament which ends on 31 July has an overlap with the start of the men's season.
England was the only country to submit a bid in 2018.

another 40 years ago today....

Jimmy Magee's commentary is mentioned in Horst Hrubesch's wiki!
pleased to say all the players are still with us

Ah the immortal game of the on-pitch attempted murder that wasn't even a foul
If he hadn't nearly died Battiston would been slaughtered for missing such an easy chance.

Schumacher was a superb keeper. in 1986, like Kahn in 2002, he was ace until he had a poor game in the final.
The following year his career disintergrated after a tell all autobiography which was translated into multiple languages but not English unfortunately.
His straight talking on misbehaviour in West German camps, strong views on team mates and most of all doping in football led to him being permanently banished by national manager Beckenbauer and sacked by FC Koln the only club he had ever played for.
with few options Schumacher went to Schalke who despite having gates of 55,000 were struggling and suffered relegation. Schumacher also had to eat his words on Schalke's star Olaf Thon who was being raved about as a one the world's best young players.
Then Schumacher went to Turkey and won the League with Fenerbache.
In his late 30's there was a remarkable eneding to 'Toni' Schumacher's career;
Bayern had a goalkeeper crisis and decided to turn to Mr. nongrata himself and redeem Toni.
This got huge attention in Germany 1992 and gave his career a happier ending than he could have ever hoped for.

Phil Walker (1954 - 8 July 2022)
Never heard of Phil Walker who was one of the 70's pioneer wave of black English footballers but he played for Millwall and Charlton before moving successfully to Portugal aged 30. Walker spent 11 years playing there including seven years at Boavista (1984-91).

A friend just alerted me to this: Neil Warnock's penchant for screaming "FUCKING HELLFIRE!" in the dressing room.

watched most of Sweden v Holland in Women's Euros - really impressive. very high quality football from both.

wonder what teams who play like this think when they see likes of Glenn Whelan or McShane.

That's literally 2 of the 4 or 5 women's teams that can actually play generally decent football. The rest are fucking gash. Most of the world is at Ireland men's team level (or worse) compared to their Spain men's team football equivalence. Basically outside those top 5 teams or so, every other International women's team is playing 5 at the back against them because they're fucking shit.

it's better than men's football so! England play 7 at the back and they're good.
nearly every player on the pitch last night was better than the Irish lads skills wise.

the difference in standard between the best and mediocre is big but Ireland always put up a good fight against the top teams. while a poor Ukraine side some how beat Ireland after losing 8-0 to Germany.

for decades (since at least the 80's) it's been normal for women to play soccer in Scandinavia and watching Sweden you see the results. Holland are a more recent superpower but they probably just applied what they were doing in men's football developing kids since the 60's.

Spain were unlucky in last world cup. they lost 1-0 to Germany in their group and the USA beat them 2-1 with two penalties in the QF if I remember correctly.

I dunno about last night, but I saw the England-Austria match (2 of the better sides outside the top 5 or so) play the other day, and the technical skills were far behind men's football. So many first touches of the ball ending up a yard away from the player. The goal itself came from a poor first touch (albeit from a difficult through pass) that got the keeper to rush out, but for some reason the keeper kind of stopped instead of just going for the smash, otherwise she would probably have saved it before she got lobbed. Harald Schumacher would have been horrified!
