“An album of free music that is dynamic and serene; songs guided by an understanding of the bucolic that grasps its elegance as well as occasional tumult…a unique footprint.” – Pitchfork

“Wyland’s is a spiritually oriented trip that flirts with pop-song format but finds it a mere jumping-off point for airy, delicately defined flights of fantasy.” – LA Weekly

This is the debut Irish performance of Portland’s AU, following the release of their second LP, Verbs. The album is flanked at one of its ends by the blissful bombast of a 20-plus person vocal chorus, and concludes some forty minutes later in the hushed strains of a wistful lullaby. Between these disparate bookends lies the staggering aesthetic expanse of Verbs - the second LP from acclaimed Portland, OR. experimental pop collective Au.
AU (pronounced "Ay-you") is the work of multi-instrumentalist Luke Wyland, begun while finishing up his degree from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, then moved across the US to Portland, OR. AU is currently a full-time duo with Dana Valatka on drums (Jackie-O-Motherfucker, Mustaphamond).
Verbs is the elated realization of those many asymmetrical pop diamonds that shone so brightly throughout Au’s artful debut (whose warm, Appalachia-informed gems found many favorable comparisons to the far-reaching likes of Arnold Dreyblatt, Animal Collective, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and Grizzly Bear) - its many swift and unexpected evolutions shepherded confidently by Wyland's competent, classically-trained hand. As surprising as it is immediate, Verbs is infused with all of the earnest and palpable joy of its creation - the delightfully enveloping whole of which demands to be heard.

Hired Hands met while in school and college in Dublin. They come from a classical background but play their own mix of folk and rock with an emphasis on vocal harmonies and a natural string and woodwind sound matching twin guitars. The band play and record in a church hall and gig regularly around Dublin. They have recently finished recording their first album which will be released in 2009 on Any Other City Records (Villagers, New Amusement). Influences include The Band, Joanna Newsom, Fleet Foxes and John Coltrane.
